Just got a call from a buddy of mine coming through the rocks. They have caught what they believe to be the new snowy grouper state record!!! Without stealing too much thunder, I will let them come back and announce and post the detail, but they weighed it on a digital hand scale and said it put the fish easily over 32 lbs!!! Said that they are 100% sure that it’s a snowy, but need to take it in to get certified. More details coming soon!!!
Congtrats Scotty and crew!! can’t wait to see the pics

who caught the new record fish? the angler or the captain? was it decided who would go in the book before they came back to port?
all kidding aside, i hope they got the record and congrats, it’ll stand for a long time.

Nice Job! Love the pic of the endangered sea bass, that’s some big boys!
Annoy a Liberal, Work Hard and Be Happy!
I agree DD nice size. Congratz on the grouper .
I DONT HAVE A BOAT
BUT LOVE TO FISH> HINT
Those are very nice fish. Some are illegal to keep anymore as of today. Need to email the pictures to Leda Dunmire and Holly Binns @ PEW asap!
They will let you know how you’ve caught critically endangered species!
FWIW to the viewing public, the 2nd dorsal spine is considerably longer than the 3rd on warsaw’s. The 3rd dorsal spine is almost always longer on snowies.
Key factor is 10 dorsal spines or not.
I.D. on snowies and warsaws sucks almost as much as determining whether grouper are yellowmouth or scamp. Only thing is yellowmouth/scamp don’t have one now banned while the other isn’t!
Warsaws and kitty mitchells are now banned. Be careful everyone!
Anyways…
Good job on getting these fish on the last day before the closure! They are definately the tastiest grouper I know of. Wish I could have made it out there too!
Maybe someone will invent a time machine and then we can go catch some more of these things.

The fish was verified by DNR this morning. They said that the large white spots in perfect vertical alignment was a sure sign it was a snowy as well as the 11 dorsal spines. They also said something about the jaw with respect to the eye being another indicator. The biologist told him that he is confident that it is a snowy grouper, but that they have taken some tissue samples and such to send off for verifiation.
Very hard to tell them apart.
Warsaw grouper:
http://www.safmc.net/FishIDandRegs/FishGallery/WarsawGrouper/tabid/337/Default.aspx
The warsaw grouper is the only member of the genus Epinephelous that has 10 dorsal spines, the second of which is much longer than the third. The color is a grayish brown to dark reddish-brown background with numerous small, irregular white blotches on the sides. The color appears much lighter around the nape and along the posterior margin of the operculum. All of the fins are dark brown, except the white-splotched spiny portion of the dorsal fin.
Snowy grouper:
http://www.safmc.net/FishIDandRegs/FishGallery/SnowyGrouper/tabid/328/Default.aspx
The coloration of this species varies with the size of the fish. Smaller fish are dark brown overall, punctuated with coin-size pearly white spots on the sides. A distinctive black, saddle-shaped blotch occurs on the caudal peduncle and extends down below the the lateral line. Larger snowy groupers usually lose the white spots and caudal saddle and become dark brown with a slight coppery tint. The spiny portion of the dorsal fin has a black margin.

Heck, the thing could even be yellowedge if you didn’t look it over with a fine tooth comb!
Here is a pic of a world record snowy according to the website it’s on, and it looks like it’s second spine and edges of the fins and all are exactly like what were caught yesterday.
Regardless, I have no doubts it is a snowy if it’s got 11 spines and DNR verified though.
Congrats again!
Hope we get to hear the story!
Very nice goin on the fish! And catchin them endangered black sea bass 4 at a time, shame on you, you should know better then that!

God is great, Beer is good, People are crazy
Very nice! It looks like the ocean was much prettier there than where we were fishing yesterday. Nice going on the fish. I wish we caught one that big on the last day. Ours were just average, but the last ones for us nonetheless. I hate to see such a great fishery go away. This is all just crazy. What will be next?

Cobia perhaps. Blackfin tuna also likely. SAFMC wants to manage them…

I thought that the Cobia reduction was in Amendment 22 along with Dolphin and Wahoo. Is there another amendment out there Phin?

Amendment 22 is the long term red snapper amendment.
Cobia was in the comprehensive annual catch limits amendment with dolphin and wahoo like you said. For some reason they took cobia out and will be having public meetings on it in April we heard.
Cobia will be in the joint Gulf/S. Atlantic Coastal Migratory Pelagics Amendment 18. This will be king mackerel, Spanish mackerel, and cobia.
I have no idea what they will be attempting to do, but from what we heard on cobia before they pulled it out of the dolphin/wahoo amendment they were wanting to go to like 1 or 2 per vessel or some nonsense like that (surprised?).
I don’t want to high-jack the thread here, so I will start another one in offshore discussion about what’s probably next in terms of healthy fisheries lost due to a screwed up law and a few people whose living is made hurting us.

So what was the official weight?
My scale said our snowy was 32lbs the night after it was caught. Weighed it on a certified scale the afternoon after that, and it was only 30lb 3oz.
