Okay, So today i’m tossin’ for reds and a guy i know named Kenneth tells me " I got the new state record cobia" long story short, he says he pulled a 112 pounder off the BR pier! Well he says he had to call a buddy to come in a boat to gaf it, i poked holes all in and around his story, and i’m 99% sure he’s telling taaaall tales. Before i confront this knucklehead and tell him to find a new spot to fish and leave the better holes to anglers who stick to adding maybe an inch or two to our catch instead of 3 feet and 70 pound exaggerations, i wanted to put it out there to see if anyone has heard of anything coming remotely close to this??? 73lbs/57" is the biggest i have heard/seen being landed this year, on or off shore.
The last State Record Cobia was caught in 2009 by Robby Maroudas of Hilton Head Island during the 24th Annual Hilton Head Island Food & Beverage Fishing Tournament.
It weighed 92lbs 10oz and was caught on May 26th that year.
It has not been beat since then, dude is obviously a LIAR
That comes directly form the SC Dept. of Natural Resources
when did he catch the fish?

In my younger and dumber years, make that stupid years, I green gaffed one that weigehd 103 and change on the scales. It broke my wrist, 3 ribs, took out the engine box and the bridge ladder, and taught me a very valuable lesson. All of my clients, plus my mate, were on the bridge deck watching the show ![]()

If he was in the boat, would he have to gaff his own fish?
Not sure where BR is, but a 116.5 set the NC record in 2006, a 106 was caught off the Emerald Isle pier in '88, and the world record is 121.2. 112 may be implausible, but I wouldn’t say impossible …
BR is Broad River, Port Royal Sound, SC. The BR pier is part of the old BR bridge that they left up as a fishing pier when they replaced the old bridge. Cobia capital of the world, or close:smiley:

Wasn’t there a picture of a huge cobia on here the guy caught off the old bridge in may?
Never mind, apparently it was 73# but the guy was really short. g8tr posted a pic on 5/17
Cobia capital of the world in my book as well. Yes Loophole, that’s one of my boys who caught that 73 pounder, she was 57". A bruiser she was. Fatcat, when i asked him he said it was about a month ago. Like i said i’m 99% sure he’s FOS, just wanted to make sure no one else heard anything about it.
On another note, about 2 1/2 - 3 weeks ago, i spotted about 15-20 cobia on the BR pier. One guy site casted one w/ a Bucktail w/ a rubber eel, but it spit the hook quick like. Also heard of 2 being caught this last saturday. So i do believe the Cobia’s are still here, just a little more scarce.
