Decided to take a day off from boat work and see if we could find some redfish and trout, and bait today.
Launched at Lemon Island before low tide and went hunting for some deep hole shrimp. It was cold out there! 1st hole nothing, second hole nothing, 3rd hole nothing, 4th hole in 38’ was stacked up. One cast loaded the live well, another cast filled half a cooler. Dang!!! They weren’t big, but perfect bait. Time to fish.
Went to one of our favorite deep drops, a small creek, outside bend, deep water 20’ or so, fallen trees, protected from that cold wind, and caught fish after fish on the entire incoming tide. Don’t know how many fish we released, 75-100 at least. Trout, nothing huge, mostly 14-17", reds, mostly slot size, none over slot, a few under, about 30 black drum all 1" short of legal, one accidental sheepshead that had to be 6 pounds, one of my biggest ever, and 1 small sheep, less than a pound. I’m not a sheepshead fisherman except for the accidental catches. We kept 4 gut hooked trout and the big sheep, released everything else.
Left the fish still biting at almost dark. Other than the cold and wind, it was another beautiful day in the Low Country. didn’t see another boat fishing all day, couple of crabbers and oystermen, and 2 boats working the deep hole shrimp. My fishing partner said that was because nobody except us was crazy enough to fish today We were the only truck at the landing. My bones will warm back up by tomorrow, maybe
