Went out for a quickie today with Pete in his 197. Brought home 2 gags @ 6 or 7 lbs each and limited on nice knotheads. Released over 2 dozen short gags as well as many 13 and 14" c bass. Pioneer ate up the slop! Thanks Pete. Next time the wx will be as good as the bite!
Almost forgot- tried out a new venting tool haddrells is carrying. Vented all the short gags effortlessly. Very cool little tool if you bottom fish much. It’s called “pre vent.”

Glad to see a 197 make it out. Does he have tabs? How far did you go?
Florida,
I have been out 65 miles to Winyah Scarp in my 20’ Proline. No guts, no glory. Can’t wait for my Jupiter trip in Feb. It will be great going to a place where 10 miles is considered “going offshore”
Pioneer 197, Florida Boy. They are built right and tough! Lenco tabs & curtains paid off more than a few times today. Went out a little after 8, and came in at about 2PM. Stayed close and never got in a hurry.
Got lucky on the first stick and gave it a lot more anchor scope than normal to stay safe.
Fish bit hard all day despite the groundswell that had to be on the bottom. Started culling smaller C bass and grouper until we had some pretty nice fish in the box.
Just about the roughest seas I’ve ever fished in a smaller boat.
Nice fish Wes…you always seem to know how to do it right, no matter what the circumstances…

C bass are the old standby this time of year. They make anybody look good when they’re coming into the boat hanging onto the sinkers like yesterday. Good eats…
Phin, the red reel in your hands - what kind? I’m using older Dawia 50H setups for bottom jigging - wanting to get something with more turn to line ratio, but didnt want to spend the cash on touriom’s.

Is that in fact an 18’</font id=“size4”> gruuuuuupahhhhh hiding under those Florida Boy CB’s?
'fess up Phin.
An 18 foot grouper wasn’t in the cards yesterday. I did not have my T-Rx Avet on the boat and only had 50 lbs of ice.
If these were 12" c bass, you might not be so far off with your guesstimates. These were much better c bass than that or else we would have taken the first 30 and been in at 12. You know I would not have settled for a bunch of dinner roll fillets like that. You know I look for stuff a tad bigger than what’ll just cover a cracker.
Does a better view of one of this gag help? Remember, I never said these were trophies, but on a day like yesterday we were mighty proud to have them in the box.
Are you saying those are the 2 slabs from a two and a half foot gruuuuuppppaaaahhhhh laying on that tiny foil covered saucer beside the stove? Those dinky santa ornaments are bigger than your whole entree.

2.5ft grouper? I said they were barely legal. You’re giving me too much credit talking about 30 inchers now. Everybody knows that I cannot catch serious gags like that.
Rest assured that I took great care of all the 18 inchers. This was at a fairly private area within a public area. These gags are now on their way to becoming conditioned spear-only animals for other folks to enjoy years down the road.
