friday, skunked from 5pm til 8:30pm. my son and i. his first ever time pier fishing. stuck it out with me though since he saw a couple guys with small-medium sharks, he then had a target species
saturday morning, 5:30am - 12noon. my son with his 5’6" wallyworld shakespeare pushbutton and i with my usual 2 big rods and 1 bait rod. it took only one time to decide that i need to cast for him since we needed 6 ounces of weight to keep a shrimp on the bottom. his first “cast” did not cast at all and his weight, swivel, and whole shootin match sailed about 75 yards travelling 150mph. re-rigged and from then on i pitched his baits. our tagteam effort was a success as he caught the first “fish” of the day after about 15 minutes. a stingray…nothing for me or you to talk about, but it was his first ray so he was stoked about it. not long after that he caught a Guitar Fish…first one i have ever seen, in fact ive only ever seen a picture on the SCDNR “Marine Fishes of SC” posters. it was about 28-30" or so i would say and may have pushed 5 pounds. cool fish , i must say, being “rare” as far as i know, he was quickly released after he got a photo op. anyways he also caught a few whiting and was absolutely having a blast catching greenies on sabiki.
i caught absolutely nothing.
we did not see any cobia caught or any cruising on either day and the only decent fish we saw caught was a Drum that was ~30" and 15-20lbs.
anyone else noticing the same thing? i have not checked the water temp, has it reached their comfort threshold and they moved on out? is it the weather? the water was rough both days and tide was outgoing both times. i noticed that earlier in the week, it was about the last hour of incoming and slack high when i saw them cruising. we were too late to catch that tide stage this weekend. maybe thats whats up with them?? just a few boats out fri afternoon and around 20 or so on saturday morning. no shortage of bait in the water, so that shouldnt be the problem… maybe they have all done thei
