.223 for whitetail?

Haven’t shot one in the head this year SJ, they’ve been skittish this year for some reason. Almost did one a few days ago but she turned out to be a rather large button buck.

And how can anyone say a .223 isn’t appropriate but a bow is. There’s a lot more kinetic and hydrostatic shock in a .223 than slinging pointy sticks that kill by hemorrhage alone.

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.

No, I agree. A .223 is perfect for kids and old ladies who can’t handle the recoil of a man’s gun.

I knew an old man that killed deer by the dump truck load with an old .222 topped with a Weaver K4. To my knowledge he never lost one.

Good points throughout.

Simple rule - if you don’t feel confident in YOUR ability to humanely harvest a whitetail (or anything) with a particular caliber - then probably not.

Right placement, with the right bullet, at the right velocity/range equals DRT.

To do this - right cartridge, fired from the right firearm, by the right shooter, at the right time, in the right place.

Any of these elements missing - things go down hill. The more that are missing - the quicker it happens.

To me, the idea of an inexperienced ‘forum’ shooter working from a ground blind in FM with a 7mm is lot scarier than the idea of a 223 wounded doe getting away.

To Salty’s trivia question - tough one.

Elephants taken with a military round - I would guess either 7x57 Mauser or 303 Brit.

7X57 is correct. The other is in one of the most prolific rifles in the world. It’d be akin to shooting a whitetail with a .22short.

There are also a lot of people who got trampled to death. Last thing they did was shoot a 7x57 at a pissed off elephant!!!

Oh hell, we just got done with 223 and now you bring up 22 Shorts? LOL

If we are talking ‘all time’ - I would guess a spear (lot of years predating firearms). Given that Europeans ‘owned’ the safari hunt for years, that would certainly put the 6.5x55 Swede in the running. Of recent, probably a lot falling to poachers with 7.62x39, 7.62x51, or 7.62x54R (not saying single shot kills though).

Will be interested to hear what the second one is.

Nice little read (found it while trying to work out #2) - http://www.africahunting.com/threads/wdm-bell-his-elephant-hunting-rifles.15057/

7.62X39 the weapon of choice for poachers is the AK-47.

Well, there’s a lot of people that go after them, Cape Buffalo, big cats, rhinos, hippos, grizzly etc with bow and arrow, I’d rather have they 7X57.

A .223 is perfectly fine as long as you are wearing panties when you hunt…

And a 7mm Rem mag is perfectly fine as long as you have salt life and yeti stickers to go on your truck. Maybe even SKA stickers too.

7RM is perfectly fine if you’re sitting a Beanfield or right of way. 7RM isn’t that much above a .280 or similar '06 based cases. Plus sitting with my Ruger No.1 in 7RM is just kind of cool.

Skinny does it bother you that some people are just good shots?

I gotta get one more this season, wife got me a meat slicer! Shower just opened up, gotta go. Merry Christmas!!!

Caliber doesn’t kill, shot placement does. I’ve hit deer with my truck and had them get off and run off. Does that mean I need bigger truck? Sounds/Looks to me we have a bunch of guys that are dealing with “over-compensation issues.” Using small calibers is not unlike bow hunting. There’s far more variables to consider and far more preparation/practice needed to become effective and efficient. Using smaller calibers like .223/5.56, 22-250, 220 Swift, 204 Ruger, 218 Bee…demands a greater understanding of shot placement, marksmanship, and bullet composition and performance. Smaller calibers have far less “room for error.” Are they for everyone? Absolutely not, but to say they should never be used is doing nothing but pointing out one’s ignorance. I have hunted with a guy in western Kentucky, where the average deer is nearly twice the size of SC deer, who only hunts with smaller caliber rifles and I have yet to see a KY deer that won’t fall when one of his shots hit them. Again, just like with archery, not everyone is willing to spend the time to get educated and proficient enough to effectively use smaller caliber rifles. Well, that and they can’t poke their chests out and say they shoot a flinch-inducing, ear shattering, shoulder pounding, let’s whip’em out and measure magnum of some sort. Use what you want, just use it ethically and legally. SC DNR does “recommend” not using anything smaller than .243 but they don’t say you can’t use anything smaller. It’s all a matter of knowing your equipment and working within your capabilities as a marksman.

Earn it everyday…

Your daughter and nice shoot a .223!!! Exactly my point! What's next, you going to turn in your CWP for a can of pink pepper spray?

Why would it bother me if someone was a good shot? Don’t flatter yourself. 1) What’s hard about shooting a scoped rifle? 2) I don’t get “bothered” that easily.

I only mentioned them because they do wear panties. I don’t and shot a .223 from time to time to harvest a deer.

If you are going to bring in the “scoped rifle” lets drop your bias on the .223 and extent it to all caliber rifles.

When you are set against something, you dig in deep. Nothing wrong with killing a deer with a .223, you just want to side with an agency that says it is not the best choice. ALL B.S. aside, nothing wrong with a good placed .223 or a pointy stick. All the bigger calibers are for those who like them or those that are overcompensating.
