I was thinking the same thing.
But I’ll start it off, though. It would absolutely have to be the RIGHT day and then you would still be taking a chance. I have seen those days when the ocean was slick as glass all day and you could drive a 12’ johnboat with a 25 horse motor anywhere your gas tank could take you, but those days are rare for me. Personally, I wouldn’t want to be a few miles off shore in a pontoon boat and then the wind get up. I wouldn’t take the chance.

Nearshore reef…CHS 60…Ledge its all the same!! LOL
I had a 30 ft Tri-toon that would have been great near shore! TONS of room and rode really high on the water. There was someone on the forum that took a picture of a pontoon at the 60!!

Anyone know how to dig up those photos from a while back on CF that showed a pontoon “at sea”?

I have taken my 23 foot CC 70+ miles offshore. and I’m afraid to take my 22 foot pontoon on the lake when it is alittle windy. Have had is swamped several times. No thanks.
If you go, make sure you have
- an epirb
- life jackets.
- good insurance policy
- good life insurance policy (In the benefactor spot just write Fishb8)
Even on the calmest of days I’d be scared of getting swamped by the wake from a freighter in the shipping channel before you even make it past the jetties.

i have never been in any rough water in a pontoon,I thought they would be stable being that wide, this is why i ask questions before i do questionable stuff.
We sunk one on the lake in a thunderstorm. The welds break when you flex them.

I have swamped mine in just boat traffic. It is hard to sink them, unless you puncture the toon or it falls apart.
Sells gets the prize.
The biggest problem other than swamping the thing is the amount of stress from the swells. Pontoons are not made to take that kind of constant flexing and especially from all angles.
Actually a shorter 18’er would be safer than a 24’, but then a 13’ whaler would be even safer than that.
Didn’t one break apart near the jetties not too long back?

I take my 26’ pontoon boat offshore all the time! The only time it was swamped was by midgiemullet and sells fish was actually onboard! Starting to see a pattern here!!!
I guess that Cat could be seen as a sort of pontoon:imp:
