28' offshore boat

We are looking at getting around a 28’ boat for offshore. What are your opinions/recommendations on manufactures or other items? How is the Sea Fox or Mako?

going new? How big is you wallet!

get a 28 true world marine, just ask gutwrench

Around $150,000 to $170,000

check out the Freeman cat! I like my 28 Bertram but it’s not as fast as a lot of others but I think I can take ruffer water but it loves fuel with its twin 5.7s the AC is nice at times.

Budget of 150-170k and your debating a seafox or mako, yeah ok…

28 Southport

dodmarlin does the Southport handle the waves?

Yes, do some research they are great boats. Do a search on the Hull Truth.

Dark Star

rheil on here is about to list his 30 Seahunt for around that. Very low hours, might be worth taking a look at.

Sea trial, sea trial, sea trial. A 27 to 28-foot boat can be very wet offshore of SC. I believe it may be tied to our predominant swell period. I have fished both a 27-Contender and a 27 Sailfish on a regular basis. Few here would complain about the quality of either one of these boats, they are both made extremely well and they will both soak you. I am not talking about a few drops of spray, I am talking about 5-gallon bucket loads of water on a moderate day. I swear my 23 is a drier boat than these 27s. With your budget assuming you are willing to buy used and you are looking a center consoles I would be considering perhaps stepping up to a 29 to 32. Hard to beat the ride of a 31 open contender, a 32 sea craft or a 29 sea vee or regulator. If you are thinking cuddy, you could very well stay with a 27 if you are open to keeping it in the water, I am thinking of basically a pocket Sportfisher like a Albemarle or Carolina Classic.

Good info there…

I agree move up,to a 30 plus…

SAFMC you suck!

Having a 28’ seafox, I would love to step up to 32’ plus. With your budget you will need to go used for sure. If you can pick your days a 26-28 will work. And don’t believe a 34 won’t wet you with a 10-15 cross wind. But it will ride better. There are lots of good boat manufactures out there. Test ride and make sure you have all the electronics and equipment you need.

I’m fishing a 27 ft world cat cuddy. After buying this cat I don’t think I will ever want to go back. The ride quality combined with the enclosure make for a great fishing and diving boat year round. The only complaint I have is trailering… still working on getting the trailer set up for an easy retrieval. I don’t think the trailer that came with my boat was made for it, so we’ve been making adjustments ever since we brought her home.
I would strongly consider a freeman or world cat before you made a decision. I will admit though, cats are a weird riding boat!

Good thoughts Muddy, I didn’t mention cats which are certainly a great option. Could not get into a Freeman at the price point but Glacier Bay, World Cat and Kevla Cat are all options. Same thought go into a cat selection as proposed before. Do you want to be dry and heavy like the Albemarle then Glacier Bay cuddy. Do you want to run light, perhaps a little more wet but fast with given HP (Contender in monohull CS) then World Cat. Obviously a cuddy in either with enclosure would be dry. Glacier Bay is more of a displacement hull, runs a little slower with given HP but knifes through bigger swells. Displacement hull seems to track a little better in a following sea in my opinion. The World Cat runs more on top, more speed per given Hp more fuel efficient but is more prone to the side to side shift in a following sea as the sponsons come down the seas. I have fished both in a 27-center console both on some snotty days. They both really ride good, are more fuel efficient than most monohulls, are solid and deserve some consideration. I don’t know much about Kevla Cat but believe they are similar to World Cat.

Thank you everyone for the information.
We want to be able to trailer it so that will limit size. I see some of the single hulls have a little under 10’ beam. Do most of them handle the waves at a reasonable speed? We will pick our days as we have been fishing out of a 25’ walk around and have been able to make it out.
sulcataman - how do you like your sea fox? How does it handle the ride out?
CCU7 - I responded

Get a 29 Freeman if you are trying to stay under 30ft. Otherwise get as big as your budget will allow.
