30lb class TROLLING REELS COMPARISON (on paper)

Please add your reels if you’d like.
If you can follow this same format, I will add everything into the same place so folks can compare.
This makes comparing specs on paper easy.

Thought this would be helpful as it gives folks a quick glance at each reel’s physical attributes other than aesthetics and brand preferences depending on who you talk to.

I will add more later, but please feel free to help.

Question is how small can you go.

You think you can catch a legal grouper on a zebco 33?

What about a dolphin?

Set the trap boys, we going to pass through them again!!

Yes. You can catch a legal grouper on a zebco 33. IGFA has plenty records in the books to show just how much can be done by an angler if attempted enough times.

Haven’t you caught a nice gag grouper on an Avet SX?

You can go pretty small. The fear most have is losing that big fish that somehow knows which bait is on the end of a rod that’s underclassed or underexperienced.

There’s a lesson to be learned in the above, though…

I like this comparison. Is the information above all from the manufacturer specs? I was recently looking over some specs on shimano’s website that give me concern about accuracy. Have there been any third-party verifications on reels?

where’s the penn international specs?
that would give most of us a familiar baseline for comparison.

i have fished on a fair number of boats and have never used any of the reels on your list other than the TLD.

Yes, I have but the SX is NO zebco 33.

We are going to need a video of you catching a keeper gag on a 33 classic. Rod and reel have to cost less than $20 brand new. You can use what ever line and rig you want.

For me to spend my time on this I will at least need you to bring the zebco and camera…

All manufacturer specs. I have verified some of the drag numbers above. Certainly not all, though. The max drag really isn’t the important thing as far as drag. Smoothness and durability at the setting you would be using is the thing.

Haha this is a type of thread I’d expect to see in the winter. You can tell the ocean is rough…

That’s why I always use my Senator 114H even when fishing for seabass. Keeps me from getting cut off when fishing anything that big fish can run into. For grouper I like to nearly lock out the drag and crank fast as hell until I know I have them a safe distance off the bottom; that is once I know the circle hook has purchase.

Wow…obsess much ?

I like as much information as possible before making a decision. If no time to do that, I normally take the advice of someone else who’s done that already…

Ever since I have fished these, I have been looking for more used ones.

I have 5 of the Tiagra 30WLRS and they are to big for Charleston. I can pull the lips out of most fish around here with them. The original TLD30 single speed is perfect for Charleston in my opinion with 30lb line. Perfect sailfish and meat fish rod for offshore. I plan on buying some of these at $165 a piece vs the $550+ for the Tiagras.

I messed up and bought the Tiagras when I should have gone with the smaller reels. Although when we fish for Tuna or the Gulf the Tiagras are the perfect size.

I agree with you.

I am rebuilding my spread with Avets like this:

EXW30/2TRX’s (lighter weight than tiagra 30LRSW, btw) with 600yds of 130 braid for down rod and dredge puller rod, EXW30/2’s with 500yd 80lb spectra and 250yd 50lb or either 325yd 40lb mono for way backs, and HX4.2’s with 600yd 65lb spectra and 200yd 40lb mono for core spread.

If I could find enough old EX4/02’s in the right color I would use them instead of HX single speeds. Same price and even more reel for the money.

When and if I ever go to where there are larger class fish, then I can simply change out the topshots on the EXW30/2’s to 60lb or 80lb mono over the 80lb braid that they’re backed with and then fish higher strike drag. I have yet to figure out what fish can spool off 700yds of line from a reel that’s normally trolling over only 300ft depth or less. I guess if a big fish bit while you were anchored up?

Dealing with 50 wides and 80 wides to catch 15lb avg size of fish gets old to me…

I still would even say that what I’m downsizing to is overkill even. It’s still overclassed “in case.”

I hear ya... been there, done that. Sometimes I have to catch myself from going over the edge, losing all track of time and space during a paper anaylsis. Having said that, I just unboxed a pair of Squall 60's. I'll provide a real-world report once I fish them.
