Put lines in a few miles short of 380. Had a double within the first ten minutes and missed both of them. Less than an hour later, we had a triple hook up with small dolphin. Warm temps all day. 74 to 78 degrees all day long. Most of the dolphin bites we had were early and around the 500 to 600’ mark. Didn’t get a bite after 11 on the troll.
Came in around 12 to bottom fish a little and caught a beast of a shark on a live bait…for me. Easily the biggest shark I’ve ever caught.
Saw lots of life on the ocean today. Plenty of flyers around and there were turtles and big sharks skimming the surface. We had a great time and a nice soft ride home with a following swell.
Ended the day 8 for 13 on the dolphin. Also missed something (my crew believes it was a wahoo) that crashed one of our daisy chain rigs with a bird in front and bit the whole rig off. What ever it was, it now has a belly full of plastic squid skirts and a sore jaw from knawing on my bird.
Highlight of the day was a 30lb bull that came swimming up to check out what we were bottom fishing for who swallowed a ballyhoo we pitched to him. He was a hungry critter, had a stomach full of big bonito and a flyer too.
Great day with great friends and fresh fish for dinner.
We buddy boated with FishNMistress…

My shark…my back still hurts now. That fish whipped me good.
Around 6’ long and I have no idea what kind or the weight.
I am obsessed at seeing what anything I catch or kill has eaten…good stuff there! Harvested a gator (legally) once that had two amphiuma (strange, large salamanader type), shotgun brass, egret feathers! Cleaned a spottail a few months ago that had about a 2.0" clam foot in there…go figure!
His stomach was stuffed. He actually swam around the ballyhoo checking it out for about a minute before he actually ate it. The thing looked huge in the water and had a couple of smaller cows following him around. We got lucky that the bull choose to eat before they did.
No wonder he didn’t eat it right away.

Ummm, people in the know refer to him as “Butterbean” and he proved to be a fish catching machine yesterday catching a nice scamp and the big dolphin.
Thanks.
BTW, does anyone know what kind of shark that is in the picture above?

My arms are fine, it’s my back that is sore. He took a live bait 230’ down on the bottom. I really thought it was a big gag at first. He didn’t start really fighting until he saw the boat. I had the drag at 3/4ths full on a tld25 with 80 braid and 150lb mono leader. He worked me good. Had the rod penned to the gunwales more than once when he made a run. I was relieved when we were finally able to cut the leader.
Do you know what kind of shark that is?

There have been others but not in my boat. It was out of commission for a few weeks due to steering issues. The entire steering system has been replaced and now we’re ready to kill some fish.

I have hooked big sharks like that before, and they just kind of cruise until they get about 60’ from the boat. That’s when they usually cut the line or break off from going crazy… If you had been fishing with proper “big gag” tackle instead of a 3/4 drag TLD25, you may not have caught the shark. So congratz.

I am not even a slayer despite having been taught. Using a reel that won’t break in half when you use over 35# of drag is a start when trying to catch trident gags though… so I use a Penn 113HN when I want to pick through the scamps. You can get one of these reels for less $ than a TLD25 I believe. I know that it doesn’t make good sense to have anything other than TLD25’s on the bote during dolphin season though.
Congrats on all those. And I mean congrats- not congratz.
I am no grouper fisherman; but we end up catching a few from time to time. Jerms has probably caught more scamp on the jig than I have on bait, but I am a bait fisherman at heart. I guess you can’t change some things. I have caught a fish or two on a jig though.
Please identify my little shark. I am curious.

Nice going. I suck at shark identification, but by the thickness of the body and large dorsal, I would have guessed bull shark. Let’s kill it before it eats a kid at folly!
