Fished the first 2 hours of the afternoon incoming tide at the creek club dock in I’on. Used a mud minnow 3 feet under a bobber. 7 total hook ups- lost a nice trout, nice red, landed a 16" red, 4 trout - 2 12", one 15" and this nice 18.5" I have fished many methods at that dock and floating the minnow under a bobber is hands down the most productive i have ever had.
Congrats and welcome
Good share on the bait and technique been the same for us here on the Abbapoola
Pretty strong first post jparfrey81. Great looking fish, by the way.
Put the jon boat in, this evening just to spend a couple hours on the water and some kid pulled up as I was just motoring out. Says, “Mister, I’ve got some mud minnows we didn’t use if you can use them.” I couldn’t… because, all I had was my fly rod so I asked, “do you fly fish”. He said he was trying to get started and hadn’t hooked a fish yet. Rooted in my tackle box and gave him a few of my favorite flies.
My point? Sure like hearing about the friendly people like jparfrey81 seems to be and the kid that offered me a hand full of bait while I was heading out. Keep the friendly and helpful stories coming guys.

There is no greater fan of fly fishing than the mud minnow.

Was hoping it was one of the newer young members on this board. Those flies I gave you are ‘premium’ flies. Hand tied and proven fish getters.![]()
And by the way (to the other board members) yackman72 shared a fishing spot with me and as I already mentioned, made an extra effort to offer bait to a guy he didn’t even know.
PS: yackman, I’ll put you on some fish if you get too frustrated as the season moves along. But, I didn’t catch my first redfish until I fished and fished and fish for nearly a year. Doing it yourself will be a bigger reward in the long run.
Like like like these kind of post and comments!!!
Good job young man and Ifly. It’s good to hear stories of a good nature between sportsmen.
A wise man once said “Do as I say not as I do” Good advice when I tell you that.
Glad this post got replies, I enjoy sharing technique as I feel we should all be here to help each other catch fish…
how is the fishing in the Abbapoola?
When you fish a minnow under a cork, do you hook him in the lip or the top middle of the back dorsal fin? I would think the dorsal.

I use a #2 straight shank hook through the lips. Since its a small hook and 8# test the minnows are strong enough to move freely. Works very well.
yep, hook him in the lip. From bottom to top. If i am fishing bigger bait than a minnow like a pin fish or large mullet then I may hook behind dorsal fin.

Very beautiful fish!

And, by the way… I remember YOUR first post, not to long ago. Now, you already have nearly twice as many posts as me and all of them ‘friendly and helpful’.
Awesome story. Kind of sad that this is not an everyday occurance seeing as how we are all out there trying to enjoy the water and catch a few fish.

Nice fish! I still haven’t caught a trout yet!
I reacall several times being offered bait on the water. And I have returned the favor more than once. While some get on here and talk smack, when the rubber meets the road, every person I have met face to face on here has been a true sportsman. Always willing to help another fisherman or boater.
