I don’t see where it says that you must keep every fish you catch or anything about not being able to release them. All I’m seeing is no size limit 6/1-9/30. Can someone more knowledgeable about this explain why last year it was unlawful to release a Striper during this time?

It is not unlawful to release fish. You get to catch 5 and then must stop targeting stripers. You can keep or release the five but once you have caught five you are done.

It was never unlawful to release during this time.

Your link does not state anywhere that it was unlawful last year to release Striped Bass between June 1st and Sept 30th …
That said, Laws change all the time, perhaps you were privy to something that the rest of us were not …
Please source your information so we can review …

It’s never been illegal to release fish during the 5 and done. It’s just easier to tell people not to throw them back, and it “keeps the honest person honest” if you do release them you can only release 5 fish and your done…
In English. Catch 5 fish per person in your boat put them in a cooler and go swimming…lol…
Yes they may swim back down once released but they will prob die within the week or they might live, we will never know. Any fish brought up from cool water into hot water just doesn’t do well.
The rule states you can not take or “ATTEMPT TO TAKE” more than 5 per person per day. If you have caught 5 and released them and continue to fish you are ATTEMPTING to take more than 5. Whether you kept them or not you TOOK them from the water…
Now your gonna ask “well how will they know if I released them or not”…put it this way. They can’t watch all boats but they do occasionally pick out a couple boats and watch them. I think Striperskiff has been watched and I think Rick K told a story of him being watched awhile back…
Is it worth it??? Up to you…if you want to catch a bunch of fish and want to keep them or release them, go to Clark’s hill or below the Murray Dam (catch/release only down there)

DNR did a summer time catch and release mortality study and 90% of the fish died, so you are only hurting the fishery and yourself by catching and releasing more than you are allowed. Granted I don’t think Murray has started to stratify yet so you are probably ok to release now if you wanted. The closure should prolly be more like June 15 to sept 15, but every year the heat is a little different. Also DNR has more than the big CC out there, that cameo Jon boat will get you!
It’s my favorite time of year to fish because I get to take the kids and load up the freezer with lots of baby stripers for the grill that I don’t get to keep any other time of year.

They’re also out there in a black nitro z8 with a 225 mercury on it. Saw them this past weekend in the upper part of the lake in it

I guess that’s the clarification I was looking for. I didn’t take from the write up that once you caught 5 you were done. I read it as 5 kept. So, you answered my question. Lawcrusher, just stay off my posts man. You’re full of negative vibes and information. You never post anything worthwhile on my threads. Thanks for being the thread #clown. To those who gave answers otherwise, thanks, that’s what I was looking for.

Actually wasn’t going to ask “how would they know”. But good point. I’m
Cool with the 5 and done because it may take me 24 hours to get my first 5.

Seriously? YOU made the statement that it was “unlawful to release a Striper” last year during 5 and Done… I simply asked for the source of your interpretation of the law …
Nothing negative about my response … If I came across as negative, then I apologize that you misinterpreted my response … Sheez, didn’t realize you were such a snowflake …
Hence the reason I was asking for Clarification as all last summer that was the rule I was following. I honestly thought 5 and done meant you caught 5, kept 5 and were done. I was “told” that was the case. The previous responses had already cleared up that I was told wrong and it was first 5 caught and you were required to keep them. So, why stick your nose in and start asking the person to source their (() information in regards to something it was obvious they didn’t know something about. I wouldn’t have asked the (() question if I had the knowledge about it. And Rick, I got your snowflake.

So let me get this straight … YOU ask a question in a public forum and as part of that question you make a statement of fact (… last year it was unlawful to release a Striper during this time …) and after your “question” you state, and I quote …
Source of info : http://www.dnr.sc.gov/fishregs/speciesregs/stripedbass.html
Subsequently two other people post one line responses basically telling you that you’re wrong and then I simply and politely ask you for the … your words … “source” of your information … after which you get all stupid and childish on me …
That pretty much sums it all up … Now, I’ve asked several other people and they all - as well as others who have posted in this thread - state that my response(s) were not and are not rude or out of line or unreasonable …
Which begs the question … What exactly is your problem with me??
Second thought, I could care less what your problem is with me …
My reputation, personally, on these forums, and within the fishing community is well established … as is yours … so run along now little snowflake wouldn’t want you to get your feelings hurt …
