put in at Port Royal @ 7:00. looked for bait in the Broad for @ a hour with no luck. picked up some jellyballs and headed to Tire Reef. caught the typical reef fish on squid. picked up 5 spades on jellyballs. came back to the sound and saved 4 sharpnose to top the cooler off.
anybody got any additional input on bait in Port Royal? we are headed back out in the morn. thanks!!
Correct. In the creeks. Only took 1 throw each day this past week. If coming into port royal from the ocean, look in first and second creek on left where the split of the broad is. Good luck.
we looked around those same areas and off of the north beaches again Saturday morning… still no luck. I rekon a little experience goes a long ways with the cast net! lol
picked up another bucket of jellyballs on the way to Tire Reef Saturday morning. had a blast with the spades. ended up with 10 before they got away from the boat. good times with good friends!
That’s awesome on the spades! Broad river is slap full of jelly balls from the bridge to the mouth. Due to cloudy days I guess, bait was tougher to find so I switched to a heavy 12’ net and we caught bait out in 20+ foot of water about 10’ down. Marked on graph and Blind casted. Hope that helps.
Yea, I think we were throwing a 6-7’ net with no luck. Thanks tho. I have always seen the spades on the reefs but finally learned how to catch a few. They put up a great fight.
we used what we had… ABU 7000/7’ MH rod with 25lb main line, small bullet weight above a barrel swivel, 2’ 20lb clear leader to a #1-1/0 hook. Not sure if that’s the perfect rig, but it worked for us! lol
If you can rig a full jelly ball and ease it back, you can hold some fish and feed them steady. Or put some in a chum bag / box so they can peck at it.
yep, that’s what we did. slid 3-4 jellyballs on a piece of wire and hung over the side of the boat. also tore up small pieces and fed them when they came up. this keeps them there so you can catch more than a couple. just put a small piece the size of a normal Band-Aid on the hook.
