6/6/09 state record snapper?

Went after the snapper for my birthday in a good friend’s boston whaler. What a dry ride! Wasn’t too rough, but there was some solid wind blowing across the swells for some of the morning. Never got wet though. Got to the first hole and picked at the b liners and grouper for a while before trying another spot.

Finished with a box full of footballs, knotheads, triggers, grunts, scamp, gag, 2 chicken red snapper and a possible state record that Circle Hook caught on his circle hook rig, of course, using an Avet JX6/3 and Shimano Trevala combo.

Circle Hook was so jacked up yesterday after the snapper that he went ninja on a cobia that came up to the boat not long after that… Ever seen a free gaffed cobia?

Got a pic or two that I’ll get up later.

Let’s hope they don’t shut bottom fishing down!

Had a great time yesterday.

Luke 8:22-25

Thats ballsy free gaffing a cobia.Any size to it.Thats the way to add some spice to the day.

dang fine job there! congrats

Nice job on the fish! Free gaffed a 35lb dolphin once that was cruising underneath the schoolies and wouldn’t take any bait and WOW!!! Not sure if I’d do it again! Dang near had to finish the battle with it on it’s own turf!

"Without pics there can be no record/near record snapperfish. "

And this coming from someone who never will post a pic of himself with a fish???

Psalm 55:22

Congrats! Can’t wait to see the pics

Happy boatin’ y’all!!

Thanks for the trip yesterday phin! It was a blast as always.

Pretty fish. Didja catch it in Rhode Island or on lite tackle? Seriously, what is the reord?

Polly Wanna…

scdnr lists the current record at 11-1.

im glad phin and skinneej were somewhat aware of what the record is/was, I had full intentions of eating it about right now.

In 2002, a 11-1 mangrove went into the books. This one’s 12 even.

Too bad people are breaking state records for these more exotic snapper lately but some folks think snapper and grouper are in trouble or something…

Luke 8:22-25

What are you calling that fish? Mangrove, cubera, mutton? Looks like a small cubera to me.

I left a message with scdnr to have a biologist call me tomorrow for a positive id.

If it is a mangrove, then it is a new record. If it is a cubera, then it will be supper!

Im saying Cubera.

8 rays on the anal fin…Cubera

count the gill rakes…should be 5-7 for cubera

broad-based triangular tooth patch on roof of mouth, mangrove has an anchor shaped patch.

you stay out of this:stuck_out_tongue:

I had our entire next conversation mapped out in my head, now you are screwing that up:imp:

Dog tooth snapper also known as cubera!

Mangrove also has a darker line that runs from the jaw up through the eye.

thats just a baby…

It will still taste good, either way.
