6 Reds today at Folly

38 to 42 inches

save some for us.

I left early for you. Some out of town folks there today. Nice people. I hooked one and handed off the rod to one of them. Turned out to be a 43 ". He was so thrilled. Good feeling to watch 1st timers get one! You be there tomorrow?

yes.same thing with Izaac’s red.he did a good job.

How long will these fish be biting? My wife and I made a trip to Folly Pier 2 weeks ago but didn’t catch anything. It is a 2 hour drive for us, so we don’t come often. Also what are the black spots on the fish’s tail? I’m new to pier fishing, and don’t know anything. Probably why we didn’t catch anything.

Hey Randy. The Reds should be biting well into November. Some scientists believe the spot is a form of defense, that is, it looks like a big eye and confuses predators into knowing what direction the fish is swimming. Others think it is just an inherent mark. Nobody knows for sure. As for being new to pier fishing, just come on out to the end and ask. Most fishermen are more than happy to answer questions. If you decide to come down, let me know and I will give you my phone number and help you all I can.
Has anyone heard the rumor that they might close the diamond starting in November? I heard it from a reliable source. We need to call and try to get them to put it off for a few weeks. They would lose a bunch of revenue, I would think!

Yes the last we heard one of the managers told us November 1st was when they were shutting it down unfortunately.

We tried that last time they shut it down.you are wasting your time.kerry who’s the manager at that even tried.

Thanks Tony, for the info. As for fishing on the pier- everyone was friendly and willing to help or answer questions.
Me and my son, (he’s 24)did hook something that pulled like a ship. I had bought some 100lb wire leaders at the flea market, and whatever we hooked either broke the leader or cut it. I learned my lesson, and the remaining leaders will be salvaged for the lead weights and that is all. Next time I will buy them at a sporting good store or make them myself. That was a hard lesson to learn.
When the pier closes for the season, will you not be allowed to fish there? Will you be allowed to fish from the beach? I was thinking of going south to the county park and walk a little farther down the beach, and try surf fishing. Or will the county park be closed too? I don’t know much about where to fish in Charleston except for Folly Pier and the Pier at Mount Pleasant.
I guess there is always next year. Tony I will try to find you a few weeks before we make a trip down.
I guess I will stay home and fish here. The reports are that the Crappie and Stripers are starting to bite here on Lake Murray. There are reports of 30 lb Stripers and catching Crappie on brush with minnows. Keep posting the pictures so I can see what I am missing.

Tony did you ever hear back from the DNR about your tagged red? Also, Lee who works at the pier said they were going to start closing at sundown. I don’t know if it’s any truth to it but it doesn’t sound good!

Randy - just the very end will be closed and you will still be able to catch big Reds, for sure. They are very active in the surf and the south and north ends will be accessible. Don’t let it stop you from coming!

Hokie - DNR is sending me a history of the fish and the tee shirt. I’ll post it when I get it. Thanks for asking!
