Got the call to fish the Island Spirit with Capt.Pete. We cruised out through the slop toward the ledge to see if we could put a few HOO’s in the box. Lines were out in 160’ by 7:00. Had a few rubber hooks early as well as some cuda action. Around 8:30 the plainer reel started screaming off. The rod tip was giving off the tell-tale head shakes of our target. After a few tense minutes and a stellar run back at the boat HOOOO #1 was on ice.
Capt. pointed the bow toward a new set of #‘s and started trolling out. Found some nice live water in 240’ marking bait, birds ect. We tweeked the spread a little, put the dredge and big teasers out, and within no time it was on. Had a Sail dart across the spread and slap the port short, but he wouldnt hook up. About 15min later another was piled on the stbd short with all intentions of humbleing us again. Fortunately soon after, the trolling weight setup was humming it’s song. A short battle later and another HOOO was up from the deep and in the box.
Had a few lulls / cudas in the action for a while and decided to push out and look for something BIG. Around 1:00p in 500’ the flat over the dredge got HAMMERED and was running for the hill. “Doc” was on the rod “I cant stop him,…x8#@! spool” crazyness going on. Cleared the lines and started backing down to gain some back. The next 25ish minutes were give and take, then we all got our first glimpse of color. BIG_SILVER_STRIPED; Capt. Pete kept the fish quartered off to the stbd rail. George grabbed the leader and laid him up pretty, for Me and Stubb to simutainously drop two gaffs in the BEAST’S dome piece. The fish hit the deck “Doc” was now hollering something about biggest fish ever. “Rudy’s” running around snapping pictures. Ear to ear grins all around, what it’s all about. We now had HOOOOOOO #3 (folded) in the box.
The rest of the afternoon didnt realy matter as mutch. Drinks flowing, spirits high Stubb gets the idea and says, “were dolphin fishing now, I’m done with the wahoo”. D@mn if 3min’s later the shotgun ra

Thanks for all the intronet high 5’s. It was a great day out there, have to say it’s cool when you target a species and it all comes togeather. I was up the night before switching to wire. Just had a feeling.

Hope you put it on the scale. How did you manage that piece of timber on the flat? were you pulling dinks or something on wire?!
Swamp, I had a naked riding over the dredge all morning. About 11:30 or so Stubb put a black / purp over the top of it. 10’, 200lb leader, w/ 8" of wire on the business end.

One of the best day’s ever on the water. The crew of Island Spirit (Chris, Bizzle, Stubb, Pete) were top notch in working to get that fish in the boat. The beast picked up a 30# test rig so there was no room for error. I want to thank those boys again for the catch of a lifetime, not sure I’ll ever get a Hoo that big again! I’m still hoarse from the yelling and still shake a little when I think about how cool seeing that monster come up was.

Doc, no thanks needed. That BIG A$$ smile is what it’s all about. It was definately a group effort to make sure nothing went wrong. I did have to laugh when I heard George say if it starts going bad, Im snatching that rod. He’d a’ caught he!! pullin it out of those white knuckles.
