Amen Peapod. Catching anything at that age will be fine by me. Can’t imagine what catching one of those bad boys must be like.
Awesome! Lucky man.

Congrats to the angler, thats a nice fish. You are certainly on the fish.
I have a couple questions for you though captain, please dont take the wrong way. I have read alot of your posts and have seen some of your videos and wonder why you pull fish into the boat and use a lip gaff when all data shows this is extremely detrimental to the fish. Attached is a link from the Tarpon and Bonefish trust urging anglers and captains to do just the opposite.

When Jerry Ault of BTT comes up here in the fall to insert SAT tags in poons, he uses a lip gaff to control the fish… Think BTT mainly wants to discourage untrained, haphazard lip gaffing…

“…incorrect techniques that can have detrimental effects on fish following release. For
instance, recent research on bonefish determined that air exposure has considerable negative effects on the post-release behavior and survival.”
Then I read one of your (on a fishin mission) fishing reports where you say you caught, “…7 fish for a total of 195lbs.” How did you weigh 195 lbs of fish without using a “detrimental” “technique” of exposing them to air?
I also like where you write, “all released healthy, although</font id=“size4”> one did take a little longer than usual.”
I guess you (on a fishin mission) are detrimentally effecting our local fishing resources?
BI Guide, great report. Fantastic picture.

You know… the handling and measuring the length and handling and measuring of the girth and then reporting that you caught a specific weight of fish. This doesn’t encourage people to weigh and handle fish to see if they can equal or better your information? Are you sure you aren’t encouraging people to handle fish more than is good for the fish?“Mr. iFly.” I like that.
But… you did say it was “a soft tape”.

Maybe I should have noted this is done with the fish in the water, I do not remove them. Most who practice this technique wouldn’t need that info though. Nice try again mr ifly.

folks who charter to catch Tarpon often want a quality photo of their catch and their guide obliges. Is it good for the fish? Of course not, but as long as good care is taken in the reviving process its all good. I personally don’t bring em in the boat unless its a special occasion.
Tarpon can breath air so being out of the water shouldn’t be too bad for them.
“In every species of fish I’ve angled for, it is the ones that have got away that thrill me the most, the ones that keep fresh in my memory. So I say it is good to lose fish. If we didn’t, much of the thrill of angling would be gone.” Ray Bergman
I understand people want a photo, most I think would be ok to take a picture boat side if they knew it was not good for the fish and that the fish had a high probability of death if removed from the water. Most guides in Fl will not take the fish out of the water as it is illegal to possess a tarpon without a tag and if you you do want a picture with the fish you get in the water with it. Data shows that almost all large tarpon culled have tissue separation issues, especially around the stomach, that is caused by the fish being removed from the water.

</font id=“quote”></blockquote id=“quote”>You admit (you reported) that over 14 percent of the fish that you caught in one fishing trip needed additional revival time. The limit of reds is 23 inches but, after you determined that every fish that you caught was illegal to posses, you then took additional measurements and held onto to the fish just to be able to report the approximate weight. I think most people could look at a 30" red fish and tell it was over 23". But… you gots to tell everybody how big yo fish was.![]()
The only reason to measure a red fish (in my opinion) is to pull out fish that you want to cull. Measuring the length and girth is purely for the “trophy” mentality. For anyone reading this thread, I would encourage you not to measure the girth of red fish just so you you can tell everyone you caught bigger fish than someone else. I thought these days were over. I guess not.
But, “please don’t take this the wrong way”.
Rarely do I chime in on posts anymore but I saw the arguments here and wanted to say a word. Im not trying to stir the pot by any means I just wanted to add my .02
How could it possibly be good for the fish to take him out of the water?? I always love the analogy of a human running a marathon then holding him underwater for a minute… that would suck!
With that being said if somebody wants to take one out of the water they are going to take one out of the water… Im definitely guilty of taking redfish out of the water.
Thats all I wanted to say.

Nice try again Mr Ifly but your argument really doesn’t hold water. Measuring in the water is the responsible way to estimate the weight of a fish, one of those fish had a tag in it and the info was sent to DNR. So not only did I manage the fish in a responsible way I helped collect data that will hopefully help our stocks.
Mr iFly, you had to dig back to 2005 for that one, good try though."Those who have the ability to make a d
