8/27 Pioneer 197SF declares war on triggers

Went out with Pete today after the rest of the crew decided they could not handle the 5-10kt south winds forecasted. :stuck_out_tongue: The morning continued with several more kinks to work through. This morning’s first 5 miles was actually one of the few times when I was ready to call it, but Pete was ready to push on. We went on with the plan behind schedule by that point. Bumpy on the way out, but only a 30 mile run to the first spot. Not much to do there because the entire area was covered in minnows and other bait. Caught a few big BSB that were greedy enough to spit out what they had to eat our baits. Went to the next spot and found the triggers ‘pent’ up. Pete got a queen trigger and a tripple, and we proceeded to fill the box to the top with the things. Looked at a few other spots I’ve never spent time on after that. Picked through the sharks and AJ’s on most of them though… Then we came in to another area I haven’t looked at much and found a little spot loaded with B liners. Had to leave them biting hard since we were only two strong. Had a nice ocean with just a little chop between 9AM and 6PM. Other than that, we had 3x4’s for the 197 to chew on. I’ve had my no grouper and snapper day now, so I’m looking forward to the next trip that much more.

I have pushed these botes way harder than any pushing today. We’ll get you on one soon enough.

I agree though, choppy seas and a bigger load would not have been great fun.

Now, now he may be young but Ole Phin is a good captain and he would not put his crew or boat at risk if he was not comfortable with the conditions.

Phin, sounds like you needed the help of CirclehookJoe. I would have been worth at least one red grouper too.

If you are not the lead dog, the view is all the same.

That ride would have been allot smoother in a 26ft scout!

“A pair of swimmies”

Man, if Stress wouldn’t go, it must have been REALLY bad out there!!

Man, the things you guys do to go bottom fishing! It’s so much more enjoyable when it’s flat calm.

I learned a lesson the hard way, and maybe still have a fear of it happening again. But I going tomorrow out of MB, so maybe Im not a total coward. Only time will tell. I glad these guys had a great time, good for them. Frank

left the dock at 4 am one morning by the time we got out 40 or so miles the seas were 4-5. We kept thinking the further we go the seas might calm down a little but it was the opposite. I was in a 23 ft and we rocked all day, ripped a lot of lips, but still to this day a big swell offshore scares me a little and everyone should have respect for the ocean but i am with phin. If you feel comfortable with your boat and the ocean then be careful but keep rolling. Some of the biggest fish i have ever caught were when you couldn’t get around the boat without holding on to something

From reds to marlin you got it.

Being comfortable on the ocean is on a all new level for me now.You would have had to be there to understand my mind set.May cost me a few days of fishing, but I will still be here to fish.

There is a lot more to it than “being comfortable”. You have to understand the capabilities of the vessel as well. There are many people that are “comfortable” and their vessel is not. It’s still a dangerous situation. I am not saying anything about Phin, but I know of others who push the limits because they are comfortable and wonder why their boat is falling a part. A “good” captain also knows the limitations of hit vessel.

Also, since we are on the topic, there are a lot more things that can hurt you when conditions are rough. It’s much easier to get a hook in the face, fall and break an arm, or a gaff in the calf when you are getting tossed around. All factors must be considered.

The setup was perfect, but you blew it. That high altitude has you thinking all wrong.
