Good move for Clemson. In what may appear as a backhanded compliment, I will say that Dabo has done more at Clemson than any coach in a long time. The fact that Spurrier has outperformed him isn’t really a knock on him as much as is a testament to the fact that Spurrier – like him or hate him – is one of the greatest college coaches of all time. Which is to say, comparing Dabo to Spurrier isn’t really fair to Dabo. I’m sure some of you taters on here will take that as smack, but it isn’t. Spurrier has been around a LOT longer and has learned by winning and taking his lumps (see the early USC/Duke years, and don’t even mention the Skins).
Dabo has done far better than any Clemson fan could have realistically expected the past four years. Literally the only thing he could have done better would to get a win over USC, but USC has finished in the top 10 for three straight years. He’s avoided the goofball losses that plagued prior coaches (for the most part) and made Clemson a contender every year for the ACC title. Clemson has played in a nice bowl every year Dabo’s been at the helm.
And as much as I find the guy kind of annoying with his theatrics and cheerleader antics, I will give him full credit for having the good sense to take less pay in order to hire top notch assistant coaches. A great recruiter can win a lot of games with some good Xs and Os guys on staff. Even if he doesn’t say it publicly, it’s clear Dabo has sufficient humility to realize he needs a strategically sound coaching staff. Lot’s of other great recruiters don’t have the ability to delegate and accept their coordinator’s judgment – see Lane Kiffin, Rich Rod, Charlie Weis, the list goes on and on… Dabo knows his own weaknesses and doesn’t let his ego get in the way of hiring assistant coaches.
