Not much going on but most likely the bait. It was a little older and had been refrozen after thawing so I blame it on that haha.
Right when I was about to leave though, I had a Big fish get away … Turned to drink from my Gatorade and next thing I know the drag is flying and my pole flies out of my rod holder. Ran after it in the surf and fought for 2 good runs, it breached the surface about 100yards out and when it started its third run either bit through (if it was a shark) or tail whipped my line and broke off arghhhhh frustrated mostly because I didn’t know if it was a red or shark. Since it breached the surface I am assuming blacktip shark. Didn’t get a good view of it when it breached due to not realizing it was out that far. Positive note was my knots held… Haha and I’m going to get a steel wire setup tomorrow ala dparker style haha. Been putting it off too long and it bit me in the ass big time.
what kind of holder you using? i use just pieces of pvc that i pound into the sand with a mallet. i normally set them so they’re 90 degrees, kind of hard for a fish to pull it straight up into the air. if there’s any angle towards the water then i could see how they would come out.
I use a holder like this one for my heavy duty rig. It’s kind of bulky, but it doesn’t move lol. For all my other ones I just use the plain PVC ones. Haddrells sells these, or you can find them online.
I use pvc one that I made myself. I also hit hem into the sand with my hammer. I try to set it at 90 or near it. The rod holder was pulled to about 45* when I reeled in my empty line and no hook/weight haha
Been close to losing them out of sand spikes before I decided to just leave my drag loose. And there’s nothing better than the sound of a drag screaming in the morning!
