I guess everyone is posting On Charlestondiving.com. I will put this one on both.
Made a late decision to go on Saturday. Left Beaufort or 90 ft to bottom fish and dive. The 1 ft conditions were calling us out. Made anchor at the hump around noon-thirty. Caught a few triggers and sharks but had trouble placing the boat on the ledge with a 12-15 knot NNE wind and swirling current (seas 2-4). Lost a few big ones in the ledge. Did one dive to find poor visability and skittish fish. The numerous amberjacks would scrape and flutter on the bottom in front of us and set up a smoke screen of debris. They circled around us the entire dive. I had a shot at a #30 lb grouper but I left the safety on on the gun. He laughd at me before leaving. Saw a few more huge ones but did not risk a poor shot. It was a very tough dive and I ended up with one 12-15 lb red snapper. My 15 y/o son (Andy) hung tough with me as my dive partner and made the long up-current swim back to the boat. I was very proud of him. When we made it back to the boat, the crew had added another 10-12 lb snapper to the box. We were home by 5:00pm. The ledges were full of some pretty large black sea bass, occasional reds, a ton of small grouper and a few big grouper. The amberjacks were thick. Didn’t see any cobia. No lobsters - dang.
I look forward to November with the hopes of calm seas and good vis. Good luck to everyone. Mark
