So, how successful do you think they would have been had they left early without a degree?

The win over #1 Alabama was marvelous, but yet a small piece of significance of the Gamecocks football history. As far as molding goes, I don’t recall THBC succeeding at molding his top rated quarterback recruit, Garcia, into much of a man. I do recall Dabo Swinney kicking Chad Kelly’s over hyped butt all the way to some JC program in rural Mississippi. How many field goal attempts has Lakip had this season? Don’t forget he was a Groza finalist, but he got a big head, and a big nose, and Dabo has made sure he’s paid a price…a high price when the analysts start shifting names on the draft boards…and a clear message to his team. Did you see Dabo’s halftime lecture at Miami. Millions did. How many times did Spurrier make some snarky halftime remark, or press conference slight of teams, coaches, or officials? That crap sends a message, the wrong one, to 19 year old kids from tough backgrounds who need to learn to live in the real world. Compare Coach Huston and Coach Swinney and you’ll concede that they ARE molders of Men. Their young men mature and grow within a system of accountability and competition, and they become champions. The wins are not indicative of their championship calibre, they are a byproduct of it. Until USC figures that out, they’ll continue to fail to reach their potential. The Character of The Institution is the heart of the football program, and hiring s
I think there are 6 young men pursuing engineering degrees on the team. I expect the 3 freshmen to change their minds when they see how much work is involved to remain eligible.

Clemson has many excellent degrees that any of the ball players can take advantage of for a life beyond football. South Carolina does too…
Think about it… Kids are given the car keys to a FREE degree… But, they choose the ones that allow you to say you graduated…
If the rigors of practice, etc. are the issue… then they need to escalate it up and let them know they came there for an education…
I realize I am living in fantasy land…
But, it is sad what college football has become…
The players feel they are expendable, and they are right…
I believe the players should be compensated more than just by an opportunity to have degree. Not by the Institution, but by fans.
The NCAA should create a life endurance program… Set-up players with accounts that are owned by the players. However, the monies are not available until they are 50…
Let the fans sit in their paid for seats… tip a player in his or her account for their future…
Think about DW scoring a TD and 25-50% of the fans throwing out a dollar into his account for life endurance during the actual game… Most folks are passionate at that point and are more than willing to throw a few bucks to their players… Everyone could do it in a crowd environment… How AWESOME would that be… Heck, a lot of opposing fans would so too when it is warranted.
In many ways, we criticize the players, coaches, fans, etc. But, never offer solutions to make it better for all parties involved. Is my solution the right one? Heck, I don’t know, but I did o
If a Clemson Football, Soccer or other athlete can also get an engineering degree from Clemson… I just don’t see how it’s possible. Unless they are some kind of pure genius. It would be cool if these athletes were granted another 4 yrs after their eligibility to complete a real degree. When you play football, thats your job.

I’ll buy that argument. What if the players were able to bank the right to go back if they wanted to do so, and if not, could passed it down to their children?
Still, I think the tipping a player when he scores is cool. Just push the app and done…
The scoreboard could be a dashboard for player performance metrics in between the other stuff.

The tipping idea is dumb and would become a bidding war to help get players to commit.
The option to take classes at any time is a great idea. Accompany it with publishing athlete graduation rates forcing Universities to maintain a certain rate so they stay focused on education is important. Maybe even give masters scholarships to kids that stay the full time. Probably best to force the kids to get an associates degree in business to give them some money management.

Booster clubs pay the athletes. They get envelopes stuffed with cash after great performances. It’s a known fact. The NCAA does not deserve to get rich off these kids killing themselves. Something needs to change. The stipend is , hopefully , just the beginning.

It really hasn’t changed all that much. My father was recruited in the early 50’s to play football by Alabama, Auburn and Ga Tech. He really wanted to go to GT and major in engineering. When he mentioned that to the coach, the coach told he the he wouldn’t have time for that and they would pick out his classes. He went to the US Naval Academy and played there until he blew out his knee. Spent 20 years as a Naval Aviator. I remember one time I asked if he ever regretted not going to one of the big schools that recruited him. He said no, that he always thought he would have ended up a car salesman if he had.
