A few questions

When y’all are set up, do y’all have the drag lock down, or loose?
And what’s the best way to get a surf rig to stop spinning in the water?
And do y’all like bodies or heads for cut bait?

  1. Loosen it or Lose it.
  2. Spinning? Not sure what you mean. Kind of rig?
  3. I use it all. Unless I’m cutting Whiting, Blues or Cob Mullet.
  1. Keep drag loose enough that if something hits/ the pole bends and line will pull out. Key being bury a long sand spike
  2. Keep line tight with proper weight and thats all you can do.
  3. Small baits I use it all like David. Big baits I use the head for shark rod and cut the rest for chunking. I don’t like the tail gets caught in the current. My favorite is the first couple of meaty pieces after cutting off the head.
  4. Allot of people make the mistake of letting their bait dip in the water before casting out. I never do this on the first cast. I like all the blood, guts and debris to pepper the water where it lands maximizing the scent where the bait hits.

The best way to reduce spin is to not use chunks or steaks of bait. I never catch anything on just the head so I toss it out there for a free meal. I either make small fillets of the bait and use strips or I cut the fish longways. Finger width strips about 2” long. I usually cut up the first whiting or blue I catch this way and is it as bait.

Not reel tight, but tight enough to set the hook.
I use all circle hooks and spudnicks. I put out three lines and put the rods in the holders on my cart. With a somewhat tight drag the circle hook and the spudnick does the work for me. This is when I am using Fishbite blood worm for whiting. When fishing for sharks or blues with cut bait I will use the same rig but the drag will be just tight enough to stop any line from drifting off the reel.
My favorite cut bait is spots. I like to chunk them with a large circle hook.
