A topwater first for me

Caught this guy (16") last week on a flat. I’ve seen flattys jumping out of the water twice on this flat, but still pretty cool to catch a flat fish on topwater.

Anyone else caught one?

You can’t catch flounder on topwater.
Must be a photoshop.

Nice one.

nice man, you beat me to an item on my bucket list! and on the front hook no less, she was going for it!

i have 2 styrofoam floats with flounder tooth marks in them from fish that ate my live bait and then figured they’d go for a double on the cigar-shaped chartreuse thing above it… i have also seen them clear the water on a flat before… but i still haven’t checked that one off though- very cool!

went 1 for like 7 on trout blowups last night at dusk, had a couple with shoulders for a second and lost them, landed a dink. still seems to be a disproportionate number of 16+" trout on my flat…

Topwater flounder…now I have seen it all.

Can’t say I’m really surprised. Good job as usual, Op.

obviously this fish was laying on his back while on the bottom…only makes sense he would hit topwater when doing so…come on Optiker, I thought you knew better

I know a spot where I have seen flounder jumping out of the water like crazy but I have never tried to catch one on top water. Good job

Wait, I thought you had to count to 15 before you could set the hook on a flounder… oh well, so much for that idea! Nice work!

Never happened to me either. Very cool. Just proves you never know what will happen next, keep on fishing

Why not? If the water is shallow and they explode a bait they will break the surface.

Nice job, 30 years ago trolling for trout on Wando directly across from Wand Terminal caught a Flounder on a 3" clear plastic top water plug.

One and done as they say, every time I see that plug in my box I think of it and wonder why I never use it [:0]

I’ve caught a few around beach/inlets top water fishing for trout…

They are usually the big ones…

cool stuff! gotta try out some shore spots soon… unless someone wants to take me :stuck_out_tongue:

Was watching some of those John Skinner underwater bucktail videos of flounder chasing the baits high into the water column recently and was shocked to see them coming so far off the bottom to get the lure. They were actively chasing his baits for 30-40 yards+. I was amazed. I always pictured flounder rooted to the bottom just grabbing the bait when it pretty much hit them in the head. Just went to show me how little I know about these fish after so many years of chasing them.

Like oops_lost said, if you see them breaking the surface on a flat and you fish topwater on it, I think eventually you will catch one. I think its a lucky catch but still one for the memory books. Barbawang, I think your days are numbered till you catch one on your flat!

I’ve caught a few flattys on topwaters on flats back in Georgia. Most we’re sight fished as well. Pretty cool to watch’em eat it!!!
