I have the great privilege of spending the first week of June in Hilton Head starting this Saturday. I am a fairly advanced kayak fisherman and have already located the 2 ramps available on Broad Creek and spent several hours studying satellite photos of the surrounding area. I have a depth finder and gps with me at all times.
Next Tuesday morning I will be taking my 2 boys out with Palmetto Lagoon Charters for a 4 hour trip and I’m sure Captain Trent will be willing to share much of his knowledge.
But, I figured I would post here to see what you guys may have to share so I can be well prepared before arriving.
There’s an inlet next to Burkes Beach Rd. Would it be worth my time to port my kayak and go up that creek?
I’m hoping to focus on trout and redfish but would love to catch flounder also.
Would it be to my benefit to bring some cut American Shad? They are still catchable in the Savannah river and I could easily go out in the morning and catch one for shark bait. Sharp nose are one of my favorite grilling fish.
I’ve read rumor of a Bald Eagle nesting site, is this accessible via kayak?
Really looking forward to being there. Counting down the days.
Thanks in advance to whomever shares.
Pastor Jason.
Where are you looking at on Burkes Beach Rd. I am not familiar with it. It looks like it puts you into the lagoons if that is where you are looking.
There are not too many off the beat launch areas. Most are the public ramps. Palmetto Dunes lagoon as far as I know does not allow general access. If you are going with a guide, that would be the only way I know to fish the lagoon; unless you rent a house with a dock in there.
Go by Bluffton Marine and Sports off of Burnt Church Rd. The gentleman there can give you some good pointers. He can also give you some good insight as to what is biting.
I am looking at trying to get out on the water next Thursday (many factors involved…), but it you want another yaker, pm me and let me know. I figure to perhaps hit the marsh grass on the high tide, and follow them out and perhaps target some flounder as well.
At any rate, good luck and enjoy.

I’ve read there is beach access from Burkes Beach Rd. I wondered about porting my kayak(I have a trolley) to where the Atlantic cuts across the beach into an inlet called Folly(I think).
I would be a lot of work and I just want to make sure it would be worth it.
I’ve read other posts of folks fishing from the bank there with not much luck, but the creek goes pretty far beyond where one could fish from the shore.
I just saw that on the map. I haven’t heard about it, but that doesn’t mean anything. I am interested to hear how it goes.

The May river is a great spot for kayaking. You can launch at the Bluffton oyster company, there are a bunch of little creeks to go in, and the area is absolutely beautiful. Supposedly people catch a lot of fish there too, but I wouldn’t know anything about that

Buckingham Landing (http://goo.gl/maps/3LS0P)and Haigh Landing (http://goo.gl/maps/i7oki) are also good spots to launch a kayak.

If you’re lucky enough to be fishing, you’re lucky enough.
I don’t like your chances of catching an american shad this time of year. If you have some frozen shad, the sharks will whack them. We mostly use menhaden for bait. Bring your cast net!

Pastor, I’m getting out there tomorrow. I haven’t decided exactly where yet, but I will let you know how it goes.

Yea, I think I missed my chance with the shad. I had caught 6 below the lock and dam just 2 weeks ago but didn’t have a bucket to put them in. I didn’t want to stink up my car so I let them go. Went out this past Tuesday with no luck.
I have a minnow trap and I think a cast net. If not, I’ll pick one up today.
Read in the Augusta Chronicle this morning the flounder bite is really starting to turn on.
Thanks for the additional boat landings, hadn’t seen those yet.
First morning was a bust. Too windy. Had to get off the water after about an hour. I did catch one little trout. Hopefully this afternoon the wind will lay down a bit.
