I’ll be down at Folly Beach all next week and have fairly limited experience fishing. That said, I love doing it and would like to make it more of a routine. I was hoping folks might be able to provide some advice on what I should utilize, I have a decent rod but really need some insight on what type of line, rigging and hooks I should be using. I’m happy to catch anything but catching a shark would be special. I appreciate anyone taking the time and passing on some knowledge!
I am a rookie too - but I’ve been reading this forum for over a year and have picked up some great advice for surf fishing from people like dparker677 and many others (he is the first that comes into my head). For starting out, I would suggest at least a 7’ rod with any decent reel. Last year I used a $40 setup from Wal-Mart but have since upgraded my rig now that I sort of know what I’m doing (I bought a Penn Spinfisher 6500 reel with a 9’ star rod). Use a double drop rig with very small J-hooks and go to the seafood market (Crosby’s on folly) and buy some fresh, table-ready medium shrimp - maybe 1/2 pound. (Raw, heads cut off). Cut the shrimp into 3 or 4 pieces and place on the hooks, leaving just the tip of the hook exposed. Put on a 2-3 oz pyramid sinker. In my opinion, if the surf is too rough to hold a 3 oz sinker in the surf then you probably won’t be catching too much fish anyways. Don’t worry about casting to Russia - you want to focus on the whitewash closest to you. Be patient, stand up, hold your rod and be ready to set that hook. You never know what’s on the end of that line when you are surf fishing.
I’ll go ahead and use this post to thank dparker677 and many others here that have helped surf fishing rookies like us. Tight lines!!!
Andywilks, really appreciate you taking the time to share some of your knowledge! This is a big help.
i personally prefer small Kahle hooks
Do you find it easier to set the hook with the hkale? I like circle hooks when going big or in freshwater.
