Advice

Had some friends call and offer us a free place to stay Friday night and Saturday somewhere around Pawleys Island, not sure exactly where yet. I have experience offshore and inshore but have never fished the surf before and figured while am there would give it a shot. My question is what type or rigs do you typically use, what bait, and any other tips that you might want to share. Not trying to catch any monsters or anything like that just maybe catch something to keep the kids entertained for a bit.

Thanks in advance.

fished the beach by the pier several times while family vacationing, nada. Only thing I saw in the surf was menhaden, way off the beach.

The bridge at Waverly Rd/causeway , I have seen a lot of flounder pulled over that handrail. Just drive down the road, if you see 15-20 folks fishing the bridge, they’re biting.

Off the beach a fish finder rig with a couple crappie hooks & bait (fresh shrimp, cut bait, ect…). Weight at the end will depend on how rough it is, start light & move up as needed.
I like a 7ft rod with a 2500 - 4000 reel but most anything will work as long as it can handle throwing the weight you put on.

If you can find some parking along the road (or get someone to drop you off) walk to the jetty / beach at the north end, have caught flounder & trout fishing the inlet on the incoming tide. The standard rig you use for inshore will work there. If you do park make sure you do not block any driveways.
Good luck & let us know how you, been a while since I have fished there.

Pawleys is an excellent Summer time fishery. The south end of the Island has a lot of nice groins to fish around. Fish the down current sides, normally the southern sides.
For rigs, I fish mono double drop rigs 99% of the time. 15# mono main line, Small hooks(#2), FRESH Shrimp. I try to keep my surf rigs very simple, most importantly consistent. So I only carry two different weights 4oz and 6oz Pyramids. I personally prefer longer rods, 9’-12’ med-heavy and 50 sized reels. This set-up will easily handle 30+" Reds. I have landed very healthy Bonnets and Chunky Rays if I feel like wasting time “Playing” with them. The week link is the small hooks.

Good Luck and keep us posted!

WE LOVE PICTURES TOO!!!

Thanks for the tips guys. I will let you know how i do. Weather not looking great right now but hopefully it will hold off till the afternoon.
