Question: I thought the ball had to go 10 yards AND it had to touch the ground before it was an “open ball” Perhaps not, but I thought that was the reason every onside kick Is squibbed and hoping for a good bounce, instead of a " foot lob" to your team mates. What say you?
I want to hear the official rule on it, because last year that was illegal, but when Bama does it, it’s not?? Go figure…

It was illegal when we tried it against the Cocks in 2014. I guess they have different rules in the PAC 12.
I have never seen where you can just kick it in the air to yourself. If that was the case you could boot it in the air high and then if they don’t call fair catch it’s anyone’s fair ball. But we all know that isn’t the case. It is to hit the ground or a player first. Which is why all onside kicks are booted in the dirt. They did a squib kick which is just used to prevent long returns. Bad call which turned out to be a game changer in a really close game.
Bama had to cheat to get Saban #5. Put an * on it and we’ll see them next year.

Probably need a UNC fan to explain onside rules and procedures… They would know.
I’d love for someone to explain it as its a pretty basic call but the officials seem to bounce back and forth on it.
I think we should do it about 15 times next season ourselves just prove a point and get some final clarity on this rule. Every time the game is put away, we kick an onside air ball and put our fastest guy on it.

I think the way the rule goes is that a person from the receiving team must have position and or opportunity to make a play; and I guess you could argue that point. I don’t think anyone need touch it. Our Tigers played good, and that onside kick might have swing momentum, but our defensive secondary was lost without Alexander, and losing Lawson hurt too. It was an even game and they came out on top, no shame in that.
1st, dam that was a great game.
2nd, it was a legal on-side kick. the ball does not have to touch the ground. But if it does touch the ground it is a free ball (like a fumble). If it does not hit the ground the receiving team can signal for a fair catch, making the kicking team give him space to catch the ball. In this case there was no CU player near the ball to give the fair catch signal.
Gutsy call, great execution. Making this one of the best NC games I have seen. Congrats to both teams
Fair enough. We just got screwed on the 2014 call then.
You can bet your ass they won’t be kicking to the 5 yard line anymore, and our ST won’t be turning their back before the ball is kicked. You just can’t play like that if you want to win a championship. Clemson got away with mistakes all year, but someone like Saban or Belicheck will expose them for a loss most every time.
I just hope Saban is happy with his 5 and doesn’t have the energy to make a run for 6 in the next 2-3 years and goes on to the Giants or forces Sean Payton out.

We made 4 mistakes and Bama made none, unless you want to call Coker holding onto the ball too long in the first half one. That is the difference. I thought the teams were pretty evenly matched. I was impressed with Clemson’s physical presence on the D line. Can’t make that many mistakes without creating some and expect to win against a team like that. Great game and looking forward to next year!
I was disappointed that CU abandoned the game plan that got them there. How many jet-sweeps did they run. how many WR screen did they run? both were bread and butter plays that got them to the NC.

Neither were bread and butter plays. The Offense was not the problem. The defensive busted coverages and poor special teams play cost Clemson that game. Losing Alexander and Lawson hurt.

If you let a no-name tight end have a career game, you’re going to lose. Hell of a game though.

Exactly!! That guy had 44% of Bama’s total offense for the game in 5 catches!! Can’t allow that to happen and expect to win.

Not sure what you are going for here.
CU killed teams ALL YEAR with those 2 plays. I don’t think they ran either one last night.
So the on side kick was legal?
Blown coverages.
Lawson in the neutral zone to go from 3-16 to 2-5. Then Henry breaks for a long TD.
Not kicking it to the end zone all night, 95 TD return
Watson Int., that led to a TD.
Trev Thompson not putting his hand up for the fair catch on the onside kick.
I think we made a little more than 4 mistakes. The 53 yd. and 51 yd. TD by Howard alone counts as 2 HUGE mistakes. Makes you wonder if Thompsom just threw his hand up and we started on the 45 what the outcome would have been.
Or if Mack didn’t pull his other hamstring and covered the 2nd half.
All I know is Gallman is an absolute animal, and those 2 may be competing next year for the Heisman. If Gallman played under any other QB, he would be the star, but Watson takes a lot of that shine. Whats the new nickname for those 2 going to be?
Next year:
Watson
Gallman
A. Scott
M. Williams
Renfrow
Leggett
Holy Cow!
Boulware, Big Mack, Wilkins, Bryant, and Lawrence coming in to cover the D side.
Line coaches are doing phenomenal. Let Watson and Gallman get perfect in the offseason. Fire Dan Pearman, and get STs out of the gutter for once. Get a kick off guy that can boot it. Just hand out a scholarship, and let Huegel handle FGs. Teasdale is a phenomenal punter, just a few holes to correct.
Go Tigers!
P.S. I correct what I said about getting screwed in 2014. The returner threw his hand up at the last second and we caught the ball in the air. Trev just needed to fair catch it last night. Gutsy move for Saban, but he obviously saw our guys turn and run 1 too many times on kickoffs and figured he would catch us sleeping. He was so frustrated with the night, and this was his coaching hail mary. Hats off to the coach.
