Took our annual family vacation to Edisto this year. Weather was okay and the fishing was rather slow. Had a good time with the family and friends and caught some fish.
Monday:
Headed out for some spades but could not find any jelly balls. So hwilcox and his crew jumped on board with myself, Chunky Dunk, Judge, and Planter for some old school shark fishing behind the shrimp boat. Caught a good size one and with a big crowd coming for supper had to boat him to make the Judges world famous fish stew. Well this crowd had far more educated pallet than my work crowd and were not to impressed with the shark. Won’t be keeping any more due to the large surplus of left overs.
Tuesday:
Went to the Edisto banks then the 226 hole. (that is a L-O-N-G run from edisto!) Met up with CF celebrities Phin and MCMARINE at the 226. Caught 6 dolphin, a cuda and went 2 for 3 on sails. This was our first sail on the new boat. Had a double hook-up and after some cockpit chaos got to both boat side and released healthy to fight another day. Thanks Phin for putting us on the dolphin.
Wednesday:
Blown and rained out!
Thursday:
Entertained women and played in the creeks
Friday:
Got some jellyballs and tried the spades again. School stayed around the boat but would not bite. Lots of sea squirts in the area. We tried everything. Chunky gave up on the spade and caught some bottom dwellers we put them on a Ladies man balloon rig and tried to put hwilcox on some cobia. The cudas and reef donkeys were to thick and after releasing a few of those we headed in.
Saturday:
Back to the edisto banks. After 5 kings, 1 dolphin and a cuda we headed to some bottom bumping. Caught some BSB, porgys, and grunts. I floated a pin fish on the Ladies Man’s balloon rig and caught a nice dolphin. Thanks to the POS cuda for cutting him short before we could boat him. Not bad for 85 feet.
Few temp breaks, lots of flyers and grass all the way out. Seems like the dolphin are spread everywhere and not real thick any
Glad to see y’all made it back with Chunky.Looks like you had a good week even though the fishing was slow.
Did you see any dead birds that now seems to be the topic of discussion?
BTW did you make it back with as much cooking and fishing paraphernalia as you left with:smiley:

Did not see any dead birds. That does not sound good though. Wonder if it is bird flu or something?
As far as getting everything home, there is no telling. We had a suburban, tahoe, pickup, 16 foot jonboat, and the contender stacked to the gills. I am sure we left something. It will be some time before we figure out what.

BTW, my boys from LEHI came through again. 2 of the sails hit sqwitches and the other hit a small drop shot. Solid red, blue and chartruse, and green lantern.

Thanks for some great trips. I and my guys had a blast. Have already been checking the weather to see when I might go again.
If I had a boat like yours, I wouldn’t be nearly as concerned about the weather. It was first class all the way…great boat and great crew…and cooperative fish. What more could a man want?
Pulling those big sharks in can clear the back of the boat in a hurry. Too funny!!!
Let me know when you want to go again. As the players say, “Put me in, Coach!”
I was not going to mention that on here, but since you brought it up…my head is healing nicely. None of my friends over here believe I got a scar like that from the butt end of a dip net. They say it looks more like the imprint left by a woman’s high heel shoe. I may have to get you to vouch for my story.
Looking forward to going with you again!!! I’ve been checking weather and it doesn’t look great for this weekend. I was considering going back down there tomorrow, but have decided not yet.
Jelly balls were hard to come by so finding one and getting to it before it went down was quite a challenge.
Chunky, the Judge, and hwilcox were standing abreast on the bow when the Judge shouted there’s one! Chunky, with his cat like speed, dove for it striking hwilcox in the head HARD. After some blood and stars hwilcox retreated to the helm to keep watch alittle further back. (the jelly ball was boated )
Note: Never get between Chunky Dunk and anything that he is bringing into the boat whether it is gaffing, netting, or slinging. Them UFC boys don’t have anything on him when meat is at stake!

hwilcox, let’s get that sword fishing trip together and do it again soon!!
Did Whaler Buddy catch any today that you have heard about?
??wpross?? What is that?!?! You are the Ladies Man! Change your user name quick before anybody realizes who you are! Anybody that would rate the chick on the yacht at the marina as only 4 must have to beat them off with a stick!!

Just talked to Finicky. He didn’t fish today…and is not excited about going tomorrow. I told him he should go out there where we were when you caught that dolphin on the balloon. There was plenty of action in that area.
Talked to my buddy about swordfishing again. We can go, but we have to pick the right weather. I don’t want to take any chances if we are spending the night out there. I’m scared of the dark!
Hey Scoutin, what size hook do you use with that bud light? Is that one of Chunky’s new baits:question:

Shhhh!!! It is patent pending. We pulled a Natural light for an hour but the lizard fish and rays would not leave it alone.
Tried straight Budweiser but the Red fish with little 8s on their side kept short striking. Had one on for a second but slammed into another fish and blew it before he got boat side.
Wonder what a bottle of absolute would bring?

Scoutin, the best way to prepare shark is to cut it in small pieces, roll it in batter, drop it in some hot grease and fry it to a golden brown, then give it to the dog:smiley:
I’ve been reading about ways to prepare sharks for consumption. Was glad to learn that if you ice the shark meat down…or even freeze it for a while, it loses that bitter taste due to the uric acid in its body.
I may try it ONE more time. If it’s still not tasty, then I’m through with eating shark.
