G8rnsc & I hit the water around 9 this morning. We got into the bass right away…seeing 6, hooking 4 and boating one. Two straightened G8r’s hooks…and I lost mine to weeds. They bit artificials and muddies.
We piddled around til the tide started out with a trout here and there, then got into the trout in a rip. All day we likely caught between 40 & 50 trout and 8 or 10 bass. G8r’s below pushed 19 1/2. Trout wanted mud minnows…we pretty much couldn’t get but a few on artificials.
You’re Kill’n me again…I hate admitting this but I’ve been out 4 or 5 times recently…skunked! Muddy’s, doa’s, trout tricks, spoons, 4o gallons of gas, Lucy, Bull river, Morgan, Jenkins…all over look’n…It ain’t for lack of trying. I’m losing my confidence. I had some success earlier…being new to the area I’m starting figure out that I have a lot more to learn local knowledge wise. But I’m blowing the best time of the year which is bugging me.

It can be tough…sorry you’ve had so many problems. Probably time to retire the DOAs…once the water cools to below 55 I don’t have as much luck with them. If you fish around Morgan, fish the creeks deep working a mud minnow on a split shot very slowly on the bottom. Same for trout tricks and other artificials like Nortons and some of the Zman baits…fish slow and deep. Water has to be clear for the trout tricks. Gulp shrimp and Gulp swimming mullet in pearl fished on a jighead or weighted hook work well on bottom also…fished slow. On the incoming or outgoing over oyster rakes, try a Cajun cork with 2’ of leader and a muddie or Gulp shrimp. Hook the Gulp thru the head so it dangles…don’t thread on the hook. Pearl and molting work well. Also the pearl Gulp swimming mullet under the cork. Be sure to keep that Cajun cork popping to attract the fish.
For bass, since shrimp are pretty much gone, use mud minnows under a Cajun cork with 2’ of leader. work the high falling in the grass and look for any fish activity. Also try throwing to active fish with Gulp jerkbaits or shrimp on a weighted hook. Near low outgoing or incoming, now’s the time to look for bass schooled up. Stay off them…cast as far as you can into them with the Gulp jerkbait on a weighted hook for a “stealthy” approach. Put the bait out in front of them as they move, if you can determine direction…then deadstick until they move over your Gulp…if they don’t pick it up lift the rod in a little twitch.
Thanks for the above info wildlife. I live up in Aiken but have had a place down there for many years but I’ll be darned if I’m not challenged to catch a cold!!! Will be down soon around Christmas for a long weekend and will put these tips to good use. Thanks again!!
Nice reports lately Jim, I finely got to do some fun fishing this past Sat didn’t take any pics but had a good day 10-12 Reds mostly over slot and two trout one was real nice at 22" and fat so there may be some hope yet.
Thanks for the info Jim. I went to station creek today. First cast I got a trout. I thought finally I’d found them…An hour later another one…3 for the day. I could have used your info if I’d read it before going. Thanks again
