Another Lemon in the surf

Good Call. I had that happen a few years ago. Luckily the cop spotted some kids drinking underage a hundred yards away and forgot all about us. Do these fish pretty much cruise looking for a meal or is it still best to hit the beach at low tide and search for the usual changes in the bottom?

They cruise but tides are important still

20’ of 400lb mono, 6’ of 360lb #19 wire 18/0 circle hook sting ray and 500lb swivels. I suggest investing in a 30w or larger, skip the senators as most new sharkers buy them and replace them with 2speeds eventually.

Off the beach my Senators have proven bullet proof for about 35 years. Still using a 12/0 that I bought new in the box in 1980. It is still on it’s original clicker and drag system, beleive it or not. Taking care of them if you are fishing the beaches is the main thing. In fact both my daughters recently landed big lemons off the beach on the senators, both over 8’. I’ve fought sharks well over 500 lbs on the senator 12/0. You can pay lots for the offshore reels, but it’s really unnecessary.

Senators work fine but after fishing a 2speed I would never go back to a senator. Just reeling in your anchor with a single speed can be a workout. Plus a 2speed is safer for the fish. Senators have lower drag and fights last longer. No need to strain the fish more.

Also a 30 and 50w are vastly lighter than a 12/0 and even a 9/0 and much less bulky. It is personal preference but using a senator is like using a flip phone still. It gets the job done but for a little bit more why not get with the times.

Mostly cost. BIG difference. Also as mentioned, the Senators have been bulletproof for decades for me. May be a flip phone, but many huge sharks have been landed on the piers and beaches. Never had an issue with the sharks we’ve released. I guess it’s just personal prefence, like you say.
