Went out with a bunch of people and had arguably way too many rods out even with only 1 big reel per person, but our new friend russell managed to score a nice stingray that was saved for bait and his TLD 25 hooked into this 7’3 lemon. Russell being a stand-up guy who has done his share of catching over the years passed the rod off to new comer Mark from Charleston Angler. Mark fought the fish well and we got it in fairly quickly. About 10 minutes to get it to the surf, and another 5 waiting to get it just right to beach her without anyone getting bit! For more photos check out http://www.facebook.com/requiemfishing.
Thanks for the Kind words guys I will be back out, maybe with some Heavier Stuff. I did locate my Belt and Harness (Brute Buster) if i make it to Jacksonville this week I will pick it up, other wise I will come out to the beach. Just watching the Weather for the best place to fish. Also If anyone needs a stand up 50-80 shark rod, I found a blank that has a reel seat and slick but on it I may be interested in building for some one. I think its 5’6" gator Glass blank. fugi composite reel seat
Nice catch guys! I’ve been stationed in Charleston for a few years now and have been wanting to get into shark fishing for a while now. I have a cheapo 8ft penn rod and reel combo with 40lb mono I was planning to use with a simple wire leader setup hooked into some fresh whiting(something along those lines) out at folly here in the very near future. After seeing this guy I’m reconsidering my light tackle. Any advice on catching these things as far as day/night, tide, bait selection, drop-rig vs fish finder etc. would be MUCH appreciated. Looking forward to catching the bug. Happened to me once already at 13 when I shot my first doe. Thanks! Cody
20’ of 400lb mono, 6’ of 360lb #19 wire 18/0 circle hook sting ray and 500lb swivels. I suggest investing in a 30w or larger, skip the senators as most new sharkers buy them and replace them with 2speeds eventually.
seems pretty basic. heavy duty!! but basic. I’m assuming you fish these guys just like you fish for anything else in the surf based on the tides considering they eat everything else, or are they that much more apt to feed at night?.. Going to get the rest of my equip together and head out a few evenings later this week.

Put braid on it. Fish a beefed up carolina rig, 50# mono to a 6/0-7/0 circle hook. Put fresh menhaden or a blue crab chunk, cst into current breaks and around sandbars during the day. Catch sol the 2-4' bonnetheads you want. Good fight on light tackle and you'll catch some bull reds too.
Talk to Stans crew for the big sharks though
mainly wanting to target medium sized fish. I’m sure once I start landing the 4 footers I’ll want to go bigger. Thanks for the info guys. Gonna try to beach a few of these things later in the week.
Hmm. That’s a big fish. I’m used to fishing lake erie where a 33inch walleye is a big boy! I’m running spinning gear so I don’t want anything too big. Once I can slay quite a few smaller ones and can set some sort of pattern I’ll upgrade. Until then I’m heading out to probably the north end of folly(weather pending) around 7pm or so on wednesday. Appreciate the help.
Be careful about the North End, the park closes @ 8pm and they WILL kick you out and can write you a ticket. We know from experience. Be sure to be on the beach side and not in the park as its considered a wild life sanctuary
