i have not been fishing much this year, taken my son on a few pond cork fishing days, thats about it. i did fight the rain for a while saturday night (sunset to about 9:30) at Westbank <WARNING FRESHWATER REPORT ALERT> for cats, knowing the front probably had em shut down, probably 60 degrees at best, 20mph, AND spitting rain… but i am hard headed… eternal optimist that i am <hard headed enough> to stay an hour and a half - grand total: caught 1 Cold and zero fish and got zero bites. and yes, im regretting it now <SNEEZE>…STUPID STUPID STUPID:face_with_head_bandage:…30 years of this experience, i mean ignorance, i shouldve learned by now…the fisherman in me, of course, says “one good fish will make it worth it…give him 15 more minutes” probably could have stayed til daybreak with the same results.
BACK ON SUBJECT: i was just wondering if anybody has been to the combahee light yet this season… i know they usually show up a little later than they do in the broad, and <at least> a few have been caught so far in beaufort. just curious if anybodys had success out there yet. i cant make it this weekend, SHOUT OUT TO ALL THE MOMS!.., but i will be there next weekend for sure <weather permitting:wink:>, in an Xpress 16 Jon.
note fellas, dont forget to get the wives/mothers a gift for Sunday, the deadline for online orders to be delivered on time is almost up!
That sounds exactly like me when I go catfishing. It usually starts out with me catching a few after sunset, one around midnight, and finally loading the boat at sunrise wondering why I didn’t load it up sooner.
That report also reminded me of Kevin Nealon doing his Mr Subliminal character:
I am going to the light on Saturday. I got the eel and crab pots soaking for some cobia bait. I have never been there and I am putting my game plan together now on my plotter. I hope all goes well. I love going new places but hate not knowing the waters.
If anyone sees a 22’ boat sitting on a sandbar with a guy cussing and throwing stuff, its probably me.
There was a mess of boats there today. I counted 15 around 9:30am. All we got was a bonnethead. A boat about 100yds away got a nice sized cobia.
Things were slow so we hit the S. Edisto. My son caught a freshwater gar. I guess with all the rain they are really heading down the river. My friend hooked up something huge and it popped a 30lb leader after 2 mins of fighting.
Tomorrow is the day for me to get out there:smiley:! looks like its gonna be pretty weather.
liquor in the front, poker in the rear!
A report is mandatory.
I am going Sunday with a complete arsenal. I only had blue crabs and mullet last time. I hope this warmer weather this week sweet talked some of those cobia into moving in.
showed up just in time to catch bait as tide was just starting to come in… or so i thought, perfect bait time… couldnt find anything worthwhile in the creek but on the way out casted in front of a feeder creek and caught 10 or 12 mudminnows and a couple small croakers…by the way, TONS of small shrimp are in…went on to the light with Gulp eels and the croakers and hoping to jig up some baits or get a whiting or 2. fished the light from about 9:30 til 2…almost the full incoming to dead high tide. no cobia. did see one boat net one, didnt see him release it so i assume it was a keeper… all we got were sharks…was able to sabiki a few greenies but it took a while. used shrimp on the bottom to catch whiting and the bluefish, which wasnt that hard to do. we tried Gulp eels, greenies, whiting, bluefish, and croakers…on top, free lined, and on bottom. once the tide got up, the wind decided to kick up as well and it got a little choppy for our little boat so we came back inshore to try for some bass using our minnows and the remaining frozen shrimp. on the way back in, there were lots of menhaden popping in the middle of the river, but the schools were very skiddish and we couldnt get onto them with the big motor and we left the trolling motor at the house (anticipated being anchored up for cobia all day).
no luck on reds but did have a lot of fun with about every other type of fish in the river. caught: drum, trout, whiting, bluefish, gar, shark, and the obligatory stingray. the ray fooled us bigtime. he hit a small croaker on the bottom in 2 feet of water right next to the grass. the water erupted when he hit and d*mn near took the rod overboard! i said “this is a HUGE fish, over slot for sure…biggest red i have ever hooked up[:0]…40 incher!.. or its a shark:roll_eyes:…” pulled anchor and gave chase since he was heading straight for a nearby dock steadily pulling drag…got him clear of the dock and fought him in open
Sounds like all my trips there and I chum heavily with ground menhaden. But thanks for the neat report, I think I’ll wait till its flat and try the cobia at Edisto Nearshore or the 40.
Got to the bank right about 8:30 and set up on a current rip where it went from about 30’ to 12’. Set out the chum and had blue crab, cut mullet, squid, and mud minnows.
We got 9 sharks on the mullet and squid. We got tired of sharks so we moved to the point of Otter. Set up there and 3 more sharks. Gave up and tried some inshore but this was around 1pm. so the tide was strong. Nothing. Headed back to the marina.
yes we chummed pretty heavily. had a 7 pound block of frozen chum that i bought and also used 2 20oz water bottles as drips, that i had filled with menhaden oil. i think the combination may have helped on the number of hookups, even though they were all toothy grey critters, we had more action on our boat than any of the other boats in the fleet around the marker.
i have never heard of the other 2 places mentioned above…are these also areas known attract cobia with any consistancy?
Here is a screen shot from my navionics app and there is a nice looking bank at Morgan river along with pelican and egg bank. I have no idea if they hold cobia. The only other place I have heard of is Broad that holds cobia. I am very new to these waters so I have no clue where to go except from looking at charts and where I get tidbits on here.
The only place I have personally seen and caught cobia was at 4KI and it was accidentally in the middle of the summer.
Went out today late at low tide. We got set up around 4pm at low tide. The waves were pounding pretty good, I know there was some 2.5-3 footers rolling through.
Me and my son cranked in over 10 sharks. I had to use 12oz weights to get cut mullet to the bottom because of how fast the water was moving. Then me and my son were hooked up at the same time. 3rd rod goes off and the wife grabbed it. She battled what I thought was a big shark for 15 mins.
She got it to the boat and it was the biggest red I have ever seen. I have heard of these 40"+ reds but never seen one til today. It was worth the trip to just see that monster. I didn’t want to handle it a lot so I did not measure it. I heard those big guys can get hurt when you pull them out if the water. I got the hook out and cut him loose beside the boat.
