Only thing I saw, that was a WTF moment, happened when coming through Elliot Cut. Current is ripping hard on the incoming tide, 5-6 boats within the cuts moving in opposite directions, current and boat wakes are making it a washing machine. Nasty, just nasty…AND here comes a dad at full throttle pulling both his kids on a tube behind boat, while weaving through traffic.
Multiple captains are holding their hands out in a “what in the world are you thinking” manner. Dad just keeps motoring on. Had those kids fallen off, they would have been in the Stono in about 5 seconds. They were headed towards the Ashley and passed two DNR boats. Was hoping they would pull them over and just give them a ticket for stupidity.
Hope you all had a great 4th. Back to the fishing.
Hate to do it again;; two more killed on Mt Island lake last nite;
don’t know circumstances other than boat reportedly hit large rock
outcrop at speed in dark.
On the lighter side;
To the gentleman at Wappoo Landing yesterday on the center console approximately 28 feet long, gorgeous black finish, twin yamaha 250s who left both motors running after he put the boat on the trailer and was headed home.
Your Welcome…

Nothing too crazy, but a very nice center console tried to anchor near us on the beach…about wiped all the boats out, but managed to snag my anchor line and I had to untie it. Lost anchor and guy that owned said large boat said he’d make it right. Ended up finding anchor at low tide and all was right in the world again.
Just the usual knuckleheads bombing around too fast and too close in the Stono. Lots of people dragging unoccupied tubes too… weird.
Watched one fella go flying far to the wrong side of the red markers headed out the Stono by that creek that winds up to JI County Park. Those of us that know the Stono know that’s a sandbar at dead low. Got shallow on him REAL QUICK! He trimmed up and made it out… I don’t understand how people don’t even know how to navigate clearly marked channels…
Lake Greenwood, Guy pulled his deck boat out of the water just before we are ready to launch our boat. We’re in the process of launching and I hear the tell-tale sound of a 150 Merc fire up…in the parking lot! The guy on the deck boat is revving the engine and then let’s it come back to idle only to put it in gear and rev it up once again! Probably wonders “Why does that crazy alarm keep going off everytime we run this stupid boat?”
Not crazy but really dumb…unfortunately, I was the cause. Put in my jon boat with an 87 28hp Johnson. Sometimes you cross your fingers that she’ll start but since I had splashed her the day before just to make sure she’d crank, and she did, I was confident.
Well, my buddy backed me down, I primed the bulb and turned the key…chatttt,chattt, nothing. Try again, same thing. This continued for 15 minutes. I’m thinking, it’s either not getting enough fuel, got too much fuel, something wrong with the starter, who knows?
I then check the little red safety kill switch and realize that it hadn’t depressed the safety button all the way in. Thinking to myself “you’ve go to be kidding me”. I readjust the safety switch so it’s depressed fully and PRESTO, she fires up immediately.
Lesson learned: Check the simple things first.
Several years back saw a drunk, w/ trailer hung up on drop off of ramp ,kept jerking forward until he jerked axle assembly from under trailer , then pulled rest of trailer and boat to parking area . sobered up when he got out of truck.
On Sunday, my family and I (wife and 4 kids) were driving home from Alabama after visiting my brother and in a little town called Anniston, some guy turned right in front of us and I t-boned him doing about 40. Our car was out for the count but everyone inside was safe. Other driver ok too. Now to the crazy part, so my wife and kids are standing in the grass off to the side of the road, I’m dealing with the police and tow truck. After about 15 minutes and the car is on a flat bed and the police officer is in his car ready to leave, I realize I need to call my brother to come get us. All 6 of us sat on the side of the road for an hour waiting for a ride. You wondering where the crazy part is? In that hour we were sitting there on the side of the road, with all our luggage and car seats, at least a dozen cars stopped to see if we needed help. One car even showed up 4 big Zaxby’s drinks for us. Then an older couple stopped and wanted to give us money. It just reminded me that there are still good people out there. So in the end, had to rent a minivan to get home, which is near impossible on a holiday weekend, and made it back to Charleston on Tuesday. Glad to be home.
