I’m taking a group of teens to Hunting Island State Park in mid July. They don’t care what they catch but want to catch anything they can. I’m sure a few sharks would be fun, but anything would be great. We have good equipment but no boat. So either we need to match up with someone who is willing to take the guys on a boat or hoping just for some information on where around that area to try and what to use. Thanks

I’m no expert but I try to fish the surf at Hunting about once a year. I would park as far south as you can (which is just north of the lagoon) and position myself by 1 of the 2 groins that are in that area. Get fresh shrimp from Gay Fish Company. Fished around the groins with small hooks and small pieces of shrimp. Should net you plenty of whiting and maybe some trout, black and/or red drum. Use your catches for cut bait if you want to target sharks. You will also have the lagoon right there for those who prefer it. Best of luck.
Paradise Pier is primo for shark fishing, just have the correct gear.

I fish Hunting Island every time I go there. I was there about 3 weeks ago. If you are camping in the park you can fish the fishing pier at no charge since it is part of the state park. But if you fish on the beach or anywhere else you will need a saltwater license. I have caught some nice reds off the pier and had to throw them back because of being to large(such a hard thing to do-lol) When you walk out on the pier the left side is basically about 12 feet of water 1/2 way out the pier while the right side is about 25 feet. I always fish near the end and on the right side. Caught sharks, reds, whiting’s, etc. The pier is never crowded and I like that. The pier is open 24/7. Good LUCK.
Thanks y’all. We are wrapping up a trout trip in North GA today but will begin preparation for Hunting Island this week. These tips will certainly help. Thanks and for the dads out there happy father’s day.

Hey folks I just got back in town and I am checking out Hunting Island on Google Earth. I have a couple questions.
Is Paradise Pier on the South end of the island near the boat ramp?
The groins appear to be in the middle not the South end?
Thanks

groins are in the middle, current at the pier rips.
fish accross the street on the rd to boat ramp, bait there also
you can bike to the lagoon inside the state prk.
I prefer the creek on the north end.
The North end looks like it would be good for surf fishing. Just wish we could get out on that area at Pelican Point.
I’m a little confused about the Lagoon area? I’m not sure I’m looking at the right thing. Where should I be looking? Are ya’ll talking about that inlet looking area separating that small stretch of ocean front from the rest?
There will be 6 of us and no bikes.
Not sure where “fish across the street on the rd to boat ramp, bait there also” is? Thanks

lagoon is inside the state park, and there is parking
boat ramp is across the rd from the pier
Hey guys they are not letting us fish the groins after 9. Looks like our only shot after 9 PM is the pier or on the north end. Suggestions? Is the north end worth the effort or should we stick to the pier at night?
I’m getting spotty reception so a email reply would be helpful. BlueHerringSC@gmail.com thanks and God Bless

I would fish the creek on the north side. mid to low tide should produce. ive had a few days of non stop action in that creek.
Just wanted to let everyone know we are back home now. First night down we hit the pier and landed a nice little 4’ sharp nose. Then something hit a big rod and took off. It nearly spooled us, but I was able to turn him and get it back to the pier. Sadly he got wrapped on a pylon and we never saw what it was, but think it was a ray. The next morning we fished for about 8 hours on the north end of the Island towards the bridge. We caught plenty of bait fish, learned to throw a cast net, and the proper way to cast a surf rod. Later on we went back to the pier hoping to go back after whatever that was the night before. Sadly the wind was crazy and after 4 hours of every bait we could want to use it did not pay off with even a bite. Then today we went to the groins and caught plenty of small fish. The best part for us was that guys who are hard core shark guys did not even catch what we did. The worst part was that we were hoping they would land something big for the guys to see.
Now that we are back we have decided to forgo our plans to camp in August. Instead we hope to match up with someone who will take 4-5 of us on a off shore, bottom, or even just a shark trip. Anyone know someone we could talk to that might help out let me know. Thanks and God Bless, Brian
