Just throwing it out there right now to see how many people would be interested. It would be for a few hours on a Saturday morning with a weigh in of about 11:00 am. We’ll grill up some lunch too…probably on the beach area of Spence Islands. Apr 27th is out for me and the MSC guys have a tx on Apr 20th, so I am tentatively thinking about May 4?
Entry fee $10/person. Everyone can weigh in 1 fish. Pay 1st and 2nd biggest fish.
This time will be casting or jigging only. No trolling.
It should be a perfect time of the year to do this and we don’t have to worry about the lake turning over this time.
Just reply here if interested.
Would be great to have some of you out of town guys come out as well.

Update 4/9: Will work out the details as it gets closer, but there is already enough interest and the day will be Sat 5/4.
Update 4/22: I’ll be sending PM’s today to those who have responded with my address to send the entry fee ($10/person). Please try and get this to me before Wed 5/1 so I will have an accurate count in order for us to know how much food and all we will need to have.
The 10 day forecast looks very good with an avg night temp of 54 and avg day temp of 77, so there shouldn’t be any drastic warming of the water and hopefully the fish will remain fairly shallow. We caught a mess of fish this past Sat night trolling plugs shallow, so they are definately hitting artificials well right now.
Put in anywhere. Lines in at 6:15 am. Weigh in will be at 11:00 on Spence Islands. Theres a spot with a beach area on the dam side of the island just about straight across from Frey Key.
-Weigh in 1 fish/person with biggest paying 70% and 2nd paying 30%.
-I’m supplyimg hot dogs, potato salad and cole slaw for the weigh in. Bring your own drinks and I will be updating next week with a list of what all else we will need people to bring…buns, codiments, chips etc…
no. That’s why I have not made up my mind yet. Will depend upon how much homework I can do and if I can get a crew together. Was even thinking about fishing it this weekend. Have you?
Tim, we’ll be interested unless it directly conflicts when we head up to Tennessee to give some big ones a try. Will confirm with you as we get our date set for there and as this event firms up. Maybe we’ll even bring one in this time.

How are you defining trolling for this event? One of my favorite things to do with artificials this time of year is to lob and snatch bucktails and swimbaits behind the boat while easing along with the trolling motor. Would this be an infraction?

could say “No Downriggers onboard” or rod in hand at all times when lure is in water? A month of 80+ degrees we will be won’t be worrying about trolling…lol… we will have to be bouncing spoons off the bottom in 60’…lol…
Well Tim I decided tonight I am gonna head to Hartwell sat…we’ll see how it goes. You sure you don’t to come…ahaha google said 141 miles from my drive way to the ramp.

I’m sure most everyone will be easing along with the trolling motor and casting. Casting behind the boat is fine as long as you are retrieving the lure by reeling it in. If you cast behind the boat and depend solely on the trolling motor to pull your lure you are trolling.
Note, you must be retreiving the lure. If you cast out while moving along and say just “work” a bucktail without reeling in, you are trolling.

Yea, if it wasn’t for conflicts I would like to have done it a little earlier, but I think we may be OK. I went looking back at some of my old reports and I caught my biggest fish last year in about 25 ft of water at the end of April. Caught a nice one on topwater that same evening too. Also was catching them on cut bait in 30 ft shortly after that, so I guess it will depend alot on what the temps are between now and then.
Heck, I just ran across one I posted where Me, Geronimo and my grandson caught 7 keepers one evening beween the boat ramp at the dam and the fishing pier in about 15’ of water. Never even used the big motor…and that was June 27!
10-4 Tim on the definition of trolling. The technique I describe does rely on the bowmount but there is casting and working the bait involved. If I fish your event(probably will), I will not use the snatch trolling motor method. Will cast plugs and bucktails if the fish are shallow and jig if they’re deep.
Hey Fogman, I have a couple of sure fire fish catching spoons you can borrow. You might be surprised to learn that I have something different than my favorite Berry’s spoons.
I’ve got a couple of irons in the fire right now. If things work out I’ll give you a call and explain later this week.
I think Fog had posted something after y’all returned from Cherokee. I’m talking about a couple of different larger spoons that an old largemouth fishing friend showed me over at Monticello. They are too big for perch and I know they catch fish.
There used to be a bunch of larger sized Berry’s spoons available. When I was at Mr. Berry’s shop, years ago, he showed me some that were atleast 3 ounce “saltwater spoons” I wish I had gotten a couple of them before he passed away. I’m not sure if they are still being made.
As far as I know they are still being made locally. It’s my understanding that after Mr. Berry passed away his wife took over the business. I was fortunate to get to visit with him at his shop several years ago. I had caught a very nice fish and called the number on the package because I couldn’t find the spoon I was looking for locally. He wanted a picture of me and the fish and I was going near his shop anyway, so I hand delivered the picture. He showed me around and I was amazed at how many spoons they were able to produce at the shop. He did not normally sell any spoons from the shop because it might hurt his local vendors, but I was able to get a few to get me by.
I guess the most upset I’ve ever been at Bass Pro was when they stopped carrying them. I used to make a trip atleast once a year and buy a bunch of Berry’s while I was there, among other things. Haven’t made that trip in the last two years. Might not go this year either!
