Artificials Only Tournament

Spoon, I’ll look forward to seeing the baits you describe. Rick, I’ve told them about the DD. Skiff is a true believer too!

Do they have dog clippers that run on 12v? You could have your customers drop their dogs off at the dock in the morning and pick them up at the weigh in. If they want a bath you just lather them up and throw them overboard for a while. Your customers wouldn’t mind dropping them off at 6am would they?

hahahahaahaha … that’s funny

and ‘yes’ there are 12v clippers … she has cordless clippers, too … I guess we could always go on full plane for about 15 minutes to dry the dogs off after we throw them in the lake to wash … LOL

it’s my Wife’s fault we HAVE to fish now!!!

Tim,

Count me in… relatively new to striper fishing and definitely new to artificials for striper, but won’t catch any if my lines aren’t in the water!

me +1, I’ll be sending you the entry fees ASAP… Let me know if you would like anything else brought for the cookout/weigh in?

Looking forward to meeting some people from here!

Thanks

Life’s too short not to fish

Sounds good. Glad you can make it. I’ll post something with what all we will need early next week.

I think just casting artificials will be a challenge for everyone, which should make it fun. Of course, lures are alot like anything to do with fishing and everyone has their own opinions, but I think many would agree that a bucktail has to be one of most reliable lures to be casting. I would also keep a top water plug tied on that day as there’s always a possibility of runing into some schooling fish. Swimbaits and flukes can be good too. Pretty much any lures you might would use bass fishing, but maybe a little larger sizes. I would bring a few spoons too in case you see some deeper fish like in kicknfish’s post.

I remember years ago there was a national BASS tournament out of Lake Murray Marina with the big name pros all fishing. It was just about this time of year and the craze at the time was swim baits like money minnows. Everytime they would interview the contestants about their day on the water they would just complain about how many stripers they were catching up in the shallow water while trying to catch some bass. Hope they are like that next Saturday

If I send in tourney fees for myself +1, and end up with a 3rd, can I pay for him on tourney day?

Also, your update says put in anywhere, lines in at 6:15… So no initial meet up? Just at spence for weigh in and lunch/gathering?

Yep, no need for intial meet up as people will be putting in at different locations.

After thinking about it and talking to some others I am thinking that maybe the no trolling rule may be overly resrictive?

1- If the fish are not concentrated to very specific areas, it could make for a very long morning of hours of casting/jigging with poor results.

2- During certain parts of the year there is a clear advantage to those of us who own downriggers. Right now that isn’t the case as they are not usefull, so no one would be at a disadvantage for not having them should they decide to do some trolling.

3- There will be a few boats participating that have done very little striper fishing and therefore not very familiar with spots to even start trying to catch one by casting only. Allowing trolling and just pointing them to the types of lures/areas/depth to troll would give them a realistic shot at putting some fish in the boat.

4- Even those who prefer catching them casting may want to troll at first to locate fish before stopping to cast. It’s much easier to stick with the casting when you know there are feeding fish in the area.

I am now thinking we should change it, but want to get some ■■■■■■■■ from some of you who plan on fishing.

I have no problem with this Tim. This is for fun…lol…no sense in getting all serious and technical…lol…tight lines to all.

Pulling PB and FL on the dam rocks right now. Caught 10 since about 11.

No more than 2 rods per boat and single lure fishing only…regardless if casting or trolling. No umbrella rigs.

That should level it out for those of us who cast and don’t troll anymore.

Agree with no umbrella rigs and single lures only. Ok with trolling. Not sure about 2 rod/boat only rule. It does not matter to me if you have one or six rods while trolling or 3-4 people jigging at the same time. Just have fun.

Yeah…guess I was thinking 2 people per boat. Obviously, if you have 4 in your boat and jerking spoons, there is probably going to be more than 2 rods fished.

I understand where reel karma was coming from. Cause as soon as Tim said trolling was allowed my mind went to thinking which lures I would pull. When fish are shallow like they are now I can pull 9 crank baits/plugs on planers and straight out the back. That’s what we don’t want people doing.

More like no more than one rod per person being used at one time.

I have no problem if folks want to troll.

Tim, if trolling is allowed, I’m in. I am taking my 8 year old fishing Saturday if the weather permits. My father might join us. I could not take them yesterday, because they don’t have good raingear and would have been mkserable on the ride up from the dam; so I went solo and had a good day. Anyway, quality stripers may be caught pulling artificials through the same areas we’re using boards with live bait.

If trolling is allowed, we will fish your event. If not, we’ll get live bait and just fish on our own. The following weekend, I’ll be practicing for MSC open and don’t want to have my youngest on the boat that day. A four hour fun tournament is perfect for him:smiley:

OK…Think I got a compromise that I hope will be fair to the guys who only want to cast as well as those who may want to troll. I definately planned on banning the multiple baits, but didn’t even think about using planers and all to troll artificials as I never use more than 2 rods when trolling shallow.

  • We will go with trolling being permitted. Have all the rods you want on the boat, but only a max of 2 rods trolling no matter how many people are on the boat.

  • Trolling is only permitted with single baits…no u-rigs, AL rigs, or tandem rigs of any kind.

Seeing fogman’s post I realized I hadn’t addressed the issue of kids fishing. I will have a 8 yo and 15 yo with me and I believe kicknfish will have his kids and hopefully some others will too. Entry fee for the kids (14 and under) will also be $10 per person as well, but will go into a seperate pot. Payout will be from 1-n place, where n = # of kids entered.

Sounds fine Tim! I’ll get you a check in the mail in the AM.

Sounds good to me as well!

May be easier to locate them that way then cast to them.
