I don’t know if you like to fish in close. If so, there used to be huge schools of Spanish Mackerel close in on the Full Moon in August. Seems like they were thickest at midday, for some reason. We would troll for Kings on the ledge out past the Betsy early, bottom fish the Betsy late morning (Cobia love blackfish, just reel them in slow), and then catch Spanish on the way in. I am inshore (river/sound) only these days, so I don’t know if the Spanish are still thick in August. If targeting just Spanish, we would run upwind a few miles from the Port Royal Sound “elbow”, and work downwind through the edges of huge schools of Spanish so as not to make them sound. You could see many, many schools, each a acre or so in size. They would be just off the beaches, in maybe about 30 ft. of water or less, and would come in close around the range markers, especially on the incoming tide. The birds would give them away, and sometimes a handfull of boats would circle a school catching fish until some dummy ran through the middle of them! Lots of fun!

Lots of good info above but I would push out farther… Plan to fish the snapper or grand banks… Lots of good fish will hold there in august… Including cobia, snapper, grouper, triggers, beeliners and who knows what else.
If you want to have some fun and take it easy head out in the morning early and look for the jacks bring some top water lures and at least a 5000 series spinner or larger and you will get hooked up on some big jacks… Or better yet fish inshore for tarpon
Be careful. No snapper for SC this year.
