Baby Tiger Shark - 35 inches

Blood from the gills was probably just from the cut in its mouth from the hook. No worries. It’ll probably make it.

Sharks have an amazing ability to clot very fast. We didn’t release it until the bleeding had clotted from the hook to his mouth. There was zero blood from the gills.

Very cool, we caught one last April like that… Never seen em that small till then. Haters gonna hate!

That one looks way friendlier than the 12 footer that tried to make a meal of me a couple weeks ago.
Sharks are tough as hell. A little time out of the water isn’t going to phase it. Cool pics.

I’m guessing you guys who are criticizing their catch and release don’t target sharks much.

Get a keeper on board and see how tough it is to get them to settle down after a long fight… IMHO those guys are tougher than catfish.
Ever notice that the really big sharks are covered in scars from head to tail but in good health? They’re tough!

Time for a forum titled “hetero’s only catch n release”

Someone posts a newbie Tiger Shark, something most of y’all have never seen, being held by a beautiful girl with the narrative that the shark swam away after being released and some of y’all want to arm-chair quarterback about the pictures or complain about some imagined mistreatment that never happened.

What’s wrong with y’all?

If my opinion matters, I enjoyed the post. I have definitely never seen a baby tiger, and it was definitely a beautiful girl holding it. My opinion is win, win. Thanks for the post!!

Couldn’t agree more. What’s wrong with yall?

I’ve done a lot of fishing and a lot of catching, never seen one like that. Very cool. And sharks are tougher than mud minnows. You could probably drag it down the road behind the truck and it would still swim away.

Shark lives matter. #128522;

for the record, there was a news post today about a mako caught with a billfish’s bill through it… with barnacles growing on the bill. Another good instance is my teammate used to do a lot of boat fishing for tigers, they caught tagged and released a tiger who had been finned and they nicknamed him nubby. They caught him again 2 years later in the same area.

As someone who does shark fish quite a bit, I can be a bit defensive of peoples treatment or views on sharks because they are often misguided or wrong. However they are tough as nails (except hammerheads) and I would go on a limb and say that baby tiger will be fine (until its long lined and killed for the .50 cent hook back)

I was cleaning a large Lemon shark we harvested a few years back and it had no less than 25 stingray barbs impaled in it’s spine. These, obviously, had all been ingested over time and had perforated the stomach and or intestine walls to become lodged in the spinal column. Luckily for that shark, none had hit the small cord. Some spines were pretty big. Also landed some large sharks with entire portions of their jaws either missing, deformed or with big holes in them. Amazing what you see.

Too long out of the water for all those pictures. Take one or two then back in the water to minimize stress. Just because it swam off doesn’t mean it survived. Pretty little guy though.
No Raddaddy. I learned it from 45 years fishing and a couple of studies on release mortality. Quite a few fish swim off and die later. Sharks may be tougher than most but it is still my ethical obligation to do all I can to minimize the potential loss. Long fights on light line cause higher mortality. Stress causes higher mortality. My ethics on fishing is I only kill things I intend to eat and do all I can to ensure the best chance for survival of those I don’t intend to eat. We all kill some fish we don’t intend to. No need to insult a guy for sticking to his ethics.

Helluva way to make friends on the site, but if it’s your ethical obligation…

Hey Rad. Surely you also do your best when releasing fish?

Olde Man Charters

Sure I do, as I am sure Claim did as well. Unless you were there, I don’t believe it’s warranted to criticize anyone’s fish handling or conservation ethics.

With all the fish handling discussions and wondering if they die or not, think about those poor tournament redfish that are taken from their habitat, thrown in a well for several hours, relocated up to 60 miles away in some cases, then put in plastic bags while we wait to weigh them in, then they get dumped of the weigh in dock to “survive.” Redfish tournaments should end with a good ol fashioned fish fry. With Red Rice and hush puppies.

Amen to this! When you only get to keep two as opposed to six, it would be a great way to end a tournament.
