back for more this weekend!! (Feb 1-3)

Who’s going down this weekend?

I’m getting down there for the second weekend in a row!! Sweet!!

I’ve got a friend and his son coming with me and my son. The boat will be with us as well.

Can’t wait to catch some fish!

Just trying to learn every bit I can about saltwater fishing…

Probably go out of Steamboat and out into the N Edisto to hit some of the grass along the bank and flats. We’ll have the kids with us (they are 7), so we’ll have them using the popping corks. I had some success with that last weekend, plus it’s an easier way for the 7 year old kids to fish.

What about you?

I’ve tried the docks along Russell Creek a couple of times, with no success.

Thanks!!

I’ve been to the mouth of that creek before. Isn’t there a sign in the mouth that says it’s off limits to the public, that it’s some sort of sanctuary or preserve or something?

Those signs are just talking about duck hunting around those spoil areas. You should be fine to fish there.

Weather looking good for this weekend “offshore”

This is the toughest time of the year to catch inshore fish. The water is too cold and there is little to no bait. There are always a few resident fish, but don’t get discouraged by the lack of action in February thru the end of March or early April, they will be back with a vengeance. Now is a good time to familiarize yourself with the area and make preparations for the spring. Sure, keep a line wet, but do not spend too much time in any one spot and don’t get discouraged by the lack of action. Get someone to teach you how to get clams and catch some Sheephead around pilings this time of year. If you get to where you can catch Sheephead you can pretty much catch anything in the creeks. If that doesn’t work at least you can eat chowder. Blue crabs are quite tasty now too. You can also trailer your boat up to the big bridge and put in. Facing the water as you are standing on the dock leave to your left, or away from the ocean. Take your first right, (about 150 yards from the landing) and follow that around to the dawhoo river. At the confluence of that creek and the dawhoo (about two miles up) you will find the winter catfishing to be outstanding. I have caught some nice 20 pounders in there.

Good luck.

Edisto-fisher,
You are correct with saying that the fish are biting very slow right now. I went in the creeks yesterday with no luck on fishing. The water was very clear. I went scouting new areas. Since I was in my duracraft 1542, I was able to go in some very tight places. I found some good oyster beds, and gathered about 1 1/2 buckets before the rising tide. I heated up some for dinner and they were delicious. Any day on the water is good to me.

Life is not measured by how many breaths you take, but how many times something in yo

As always, Edisto-Fisher is giving good advice. this time of the year, the best bet for trout is slow trolling with electric chickens or Gulp wjite grubs. try to keep the lure just off of the bottom, and you may want to rig it weedles. The trout that are in the creeks are in deeper holes, so keep your boat in the outside of the curves. if you catch one, keep working the same area. The spot tail fishing is better this time of the year with mud minnows. If you are bfishing popping corks, use DOA shrimp, but don’t fish it fast…let it get to the bottom for about a minute before popping.

Edisto-9871;
I just had another thought. the weather is suppoused to be calm and somewhat warmer this weekend. If you have the proper boat, try sheephead fishing with fresh clam meat either at the 4KI, or the edisto 60. There are lots there now. Clams are plentiful in the creeks, or Bobbny Fontaine at Edisto Seafood usually has some. It only takes a little piece.

Huff what do you catch at the 60 with clams? We are going bottom fishing but had planned on going a little deeper.

Capt Huff How are you? 8 trout (6 big) 1 spottail this AM. Tinker has Yamaha fixed, the problem was the ethanol from the Fina station. Bob
