bait at folly

Have tried the culverts before but just get to dirty from the pluff. Need FRESH bait not frozen crap from the pier shop. I know I can cast net bait in the surf but dont feel like driving down to the opposite end to catch bait if I want to fish the pier. Anything biting at folly? Doesn’t matter what type of fish or how bug I have set ups for bass a s well as senators for sharks.

I fished Folly Pier yesterday and bait was pretty much all I caught (that’s what I was targeting). Caught a decent amount of small croaker and whiting near the end of the pier. I was using a 2 drop rig with very small hooks and pieces of shrimp, and just dropping straight down.

I’ve pretty much given up on Folly Pier. All I’ve seen caught there is small fish (no redfish) and it’s just not that productive, IMO.

Probably just going to stick with fishing the surf on Sullivans and I’m going to try near Morris light house on Folly.

I fished at folly on 5/5 and 5/6. Caught some very decent sized whiting; watched a 5.5lb black drum get pulled up along with a spanish mackerel. I have caught several pompano out there already this year. You can get live shrimp from Crosby’s or other local bait shops at around $4/dozen.

We do not rise to the occassion…but fall to the level of our training

Dont give up Jnail

What kind of bait? Shrimp menhaden or finger mullet or pinfush?

There is no greater fan of fly fishing than the mud minnow.

any size to the spanish?

Yea, there was some size to the spanish. I can’t remember the weight but to me was pretty decent. I caught alot of spanish out in san diego, and this was up there with them.

That’s good news. Hope I get a chance to get out there soon

Small croker and whiting make very nice live bait. Catch a few croakers and fish them live on the bottom on a fishfinder rig with a 1oz. sinker and a 1/0 circle hook and you will have a decent chance of catching something a lot bigger. You will need a decent size rod and reel to fish live bait on the beach, but it will pay off if you try it a few times. Live croaker are the best big trout bait you can get. You can also fish a live bait on a float rig 3-6 feet below the surface too.
Good Luck.

Dito was PL said on bait/rigs. By the piles are good with the rig/bait PL said.

Also - off the end of the pier is not where you always need to go for bottom fish on a pier. Just like in the surf - more caught just where the waves break. Now if schools are running by farther out then move. Off end is where you pin rig for kings.
