I surf fish a bunch and have had a few of the common frabril buckets break at the handle base while tied to a sand spike floating in surf.
I’ve done a search and can’t find any heavy duty bait buckets for this purpose. Y’all got any suggestions?
Maybe a shock cord would help with the slamming of the in/out going waves?
Thanks.
Just put your minnows in a common wire minnow trap, and you can plug the holes with a cork if you want. A heavy weight in it does good at keeping it put, and you get fantastic water flow. Keep the trap sitting in a 5g bucket of seawater when you move from one place to the next.
You can also save a LOT of minnows in your bucket, if you use only the 5g bucket, by adding one of the cheap air bubblers (they run for a couple DAYS on two batteries).
Also, add a product called Seachem Prime, which you can usually buy at any pet shop (such as Tideline Aquatics in Hanahan, or PetSmart). You only would use this in a bucket, not a flow-through, obviously. Prime is a FANTASTIC product that neutralizes ammonia in the water produced by the minnows. They excrete ammonia both through their gills and their rump, and their panic-mode in the bucket means they produce it very quickly. The Seachem Prime (just a half capful) neutralizes a huge amount of ammonia.
I’m convinced that ammonia toxicity in the water kills the minnows about as fast as oxygen depravation and CO2 poisoning. Ammonia is horrifically toxic in seawater, the high pH puts it in a form that’s particularly lethal.

I made one out of my dove stool bucket. It’s really just like a 5g bucket you can pick up at the hardware store. Matt had some great suggestions
Got this at the walmart, works great. either use the chemical or change the water from time to time ie: pour new water in until you run most of the old water out.
