bait for mud minnow trap

decided to start catching my own minnows because I live right by a creek and the trap will pay for itself with about 3 dozen mud minnows. I’ve seen a buddy use a handful of dog food and it produced 18-24 minnows in about 10 minutes. Is dog food the best bait for them? also should i leave the trap in overnight or should i just go toss it out for an hour or so before i go fishing?

I prefer Vienna sausage. Only takes a couple of sausages. Use the spicy ones to get the extra lively wiggly ones…

As far as time, as long as the trap doesn’t go dry, they’ll survive for a few days with no food in there.

I’ve seen fried chicken used, crab, dog food, canned cat food (punch a few holes on can). etc. I they are there, just about anything will catch them.

I use the head and guts of a fish I caught last week. I freeze the head in a gallon size freezer bag.

No to leaving the trap all night. Throw the trap in a pool at low tide. If you are in a good spot, a 30 minute soak should work.

As long as the trap is submerged at low tide why would it matter if i left it overnight? can the minnows escape?

Plain white bread will fill your trap!

No doubt and doesn’t stink like cat food! I’ve tried vienna’s, but plain white bread has always done as good if not better for me.

Yes some can. Other stuff will get at them too. Raccoons. Crabs. The kid down the street. If your lucky it will have a big fat eel in it. You can usually get all you need in about 20/ 30 minutes at low tide. I don’t bother at any other tide.

I have always heard Fried Chicken, also had someone tell me that the Mud minnow cannot digest the yeast in bread and they will bloat and die. ??

Hot dog. Or a piece of Bologna

I heard that said before, but I’ve never experienced it. Buddy of mine in Beaufort showed the the white bread thing. Works great as does pretty much any bait. Those things ain’t picky. Could probably put a horse biscuit in the trap and catch just as many.

“Why Bruce?”

Caviar.

But, balled up white bread works in a pinch.

Ball up a couple pieces of bread, no mess no stink and works very well.

Saw a guy using a piece of chicken with skin on. He was getting a bunch of minnows and also catching fish with said minnows at the same time.

I have used cheese nabs in a pinch and they work as good as anything .

When I was a kid ( many, many years ago) my dad used smoked herring from the grocery store and white bread. Always had minnows.

I would literally use the cheapest, stalest thing in your kitchen or fridge and it would probably work. I typically use dog food or stale bread because i always have a surplus of those. Definitely no need to buy anything special to put in it

I always keep a few packs of Nip Cheese Crackers. Just poke a few holes in it and get it wet before you put it in the trap.

My favorite is left over bacon from breakfast. Doesn’t stink after a long soak and it will load the trap every time.
