Bait for Offshore

Moved here a couple of years ago from NE Florida, and have never bottom fished offshore from Edisto before. The few times I’ve been out, it has been trolling time! If I’m leaving through the North river inlet, where’s the best place(s) to catch bait, such as cigar minnows, using sabiki rigs??

Are all the inshore “local” reefs/structures productive or do you have to get out to the 100’ depths before you see decent amounts of fish?

Any general advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hey fishrgolfr,

I’m heading out this weekend (10/10 and 10/11) from 2NE. I plan to fish around the Edisto 80 and Edisto 60 reefs. I’m going to troll for a while and then bottom fish. I didn’t mark much bait on the Edisto 60 my last time out. I usually just use frozen cigar minnows as cut bait for bottom fishing. I’ve seen a lot of reports recently about using pinfish and mullet caught in the creeks. I may give that a try this time. Are you heading out this weekend?

Went out Sunday to the Edisto 60. Greenies were all around the buoy. The problem was big AJ’s. They kept cutting our Sabiki rigs.

Thanks for the info Uglyduck and Tidewater. Been out of town for the last week or so. Hoping to go out middle of next week if the weather improves offshore. Probably troll for a couple of hours then bottom fish. Understand the season for red snapper closes end of the month, so I’m cutting it close!
