I am trying to figure out where to get bait, shrimp & mullet for the surf. Stopped at Crosby’s one day but the frozen stuff (shrimp) didn’t look great. Is it best to just get the fresh stuff on ice at the counter?
I suppose getting to a seafood market before heading out is a good idea. I know Haddrell’s has bait too so maybe that is an option.
Do you guys like the frozen finger mullet? I am looking to do some chunking and didn’t see the full size ones. Any info or thoughts would be great. Thanks for the help
I buy medium shrimp from the seafood markets. I’m in Mt Pleasant so I buy medium shrimp from Mt Pleasant Seafood, or once shrimping season starts I buy right off the boat at the docks. I cut medium shrimp into 2 or 3 pieces for bait. Fresh, small pieces work well, and dont fall off or get picked off as easily as frozen. For mullet I prefer to net and cut, even the finger mullet. Fresh is always better than frozen for the same reason as the shrimp. I buy the tubs of frozen cut mullet as backup when I can’t get any with the net.
Yeah…what he said. Personally, I only use mullet in the fall to early spring, Sept-April. I just get the frozen finger mullet. During the summer too many Bluefish and Sharks.
So during summer the fresh shrimp would be best?
Shrimp is always good. I’m just not real interested in catching Sharks, Rays and Bluefish when the big fat Whiting, Specks, Pompano, Slot/Rat Reds and others are bittin’. I will use my patented “Whiting strips” when the Specks are feeding on smaller fish though, but is usually just as the Mullet run starts. If I do feel like fishing cut bait, I’ll just cut some Whiting. But the usual result is…Sharks and Blufish, in the summer. IMO
When using shrimp for reds, do you use a whole fresh shrimp or break it in half? Does shrimp work for reds in both the surf and the creeks? What about live vs fresh shrimp? Still trying to get better at fishing in the Charleston area, Thanks
I have caught 30" plus Reds on half a med. shrimp. Here’s a pic of a decent one…half a shrimp, #2 j-hook, 15lb mono. Was in November.
