Bait shrimping Beaufort

Hey everybody. Just wanted to see if anyone had any general areas to suggest for bait shrimping around Beaufort. Not looking for anyone’s secret spot, but didn’t know if there was a “known” area around sort of like crab bank or James Island YC up in Charleston. Me and my wife just moved down to Lady’s Island from Charleston (couldn’t handle the big city anymore) a couple months ago, had our first baby and now I’m finally trying to find some time to start exploring our new water. Going to fish the incoming in the am And that’ll only be second time I’ve been out in Beaufort. Any info is appreciated!

The whole area is good with shrimp when baiting so just about any area around here is good. Tough for anyone to suggest without knowing what size boat you will be working out of and what your experience level is.

The experienced folks go out and look for sand shelfs close to deep water cuts in order to get the bigger shrimp. Going out with a depth finder during your free time might help you find these and mark them for possible locations for when the season begins.

Pigeon Point. Go where all the other boats are. If you have a larger boat, set up in front of Fort Freemont. There will be plenty of company there too.

Also, the Sam’s Point area is good at times. But, the Coosaw can get mean when the wind opposes the tide. Do a landing survey. See the landings section on the SCDNR website for the location of landings in your area. Go where the landing is crowded late in the afternoon. Then do a “Ride-N-See” survey of the river to see where all the boats are setting up.

Also, Corning Landing/Whale Branch is usually popular early in the season.

The mouth of Colleton River gets lit up like a Christmas Tree during baiting season. Launch at Lemon Island Bridge (Edgar Glenn) landing. Go downriver a few miles, and turn right into the Colleton River. Join the crowd on the right. Others will set up nearby off Bananna Island.

I’ve had some good trips around Morgan Island.

Every shallow creek and almost all river banks have bait now. Catching bait isn’t a problem.

^I see what you did there

Hey thanks everyone! It looks like shrimp season will be delayed for me. The Wife had to have some unexpected surgery and hospital stay this week, so with a 6 week old and a new business, I think it’ll be a little while til I make it out. I’ve been seeing a whole lot of shrimp poles riding down the roads this weekend. Hope everyone got a couple coolers this weekend! Larry I think your advice has put enough fish on the table for my family to let that one slide this time!

I meant no harm. sorry if you took that negatively, it wasn’t meant to be. But if it’s September in Beaufort there are bait shrimp in every creek now.
