Bar Hopping

Headed out solo with Grace this weekend to see if we could round up a few fish. We loaded up with some fresh mullet landed in the cast net and headed out to our spot. As soon as we were able we waded through a chest deep trough and made our way to an outer bar. Doing this has provided some good fishing for me in the past and I felt like it was worth the effort. Thankfully the water was not freezing, but if it was, I was going in regardless. As soon as we got to the bar and deployed bait we had a double. Two decent reds caught and released. We kept at it landing four more reds, a couple nice black drum, a blue and a couple of whiting. We had two shark runs and two bite offs on our mono red rigs. The following day we headed back out and were able to bag 4 more reds, 2 rays, some more black drum and whiting. 10 reds total in two trips. The fish were mid sized and no monster ever came along, but we did our best. Had another shark run that peeled off a couple hundred yards of line. I fought it knowing at some point the bite off was inevitable on my red rigs. Got it all the way up close to the beach and pop. Looked like a pretty nice shark with the big tail and dorsal fin waving at me in the wash. Take a look at the size of this whiting. It blew my mind measuring just slightly under 16 inches. Freaking monster looked like a bass. Speaking of bass little Pete asked me to post his trophy catch he caught in a lake in our neighborhood last weekend, it hit live finger mullet. God Bless to all and best of luck folks, can’t wait for the MAD trip, hopefully the fish show:smiley:

Hilton Head - unofficial shark bite capital of the world.

Great fish Buddy. Heading out this morning trying to get me some red’s as well

Thank you Sir, got to make sure Mr. Pod has a read with his coffee in the morning:smiley:

Nice fish and a good day Pete. I like how you write the limits on your cooler.
Hey, how do you get your cart out to those outer bars when wading through deeper water ?

Pier carts float

Just curious, did you fish the trough first? I believe you have said in the past that the troughs are what to look for on the beach. A chest deep trough seems like a great spot to fish compared to a flat beach.

Nice catch pete… I like that you put some quick reference size and limits on your cart. I did the same only the size I will add the limits too. Its easy to reference. I will be going out this saturday.

Yes we usually fish the first trough at the high tide line when permitting. It is more productive when it’s filled in good. At some point when the tide starts going out, the fish leave it, because they don’t want to get stranded in it. Surprisingly they leave fairly quickly in that particular spot because it gets land locked and they don’t want to get caught in it. When that happens I’m left with no option but to go through the trough and make my way to the outer bar on other side to get to the fish again. You really need to “BE CAREFUL DOING THIS” and know how deep the water is getting because you can get stranded on the outside bar and have to swim
back with gear, cart poles etc. The trough we go through is calm at this point because it is essentially land locked and sheltered from waves. If it was not land locked. I would not do it. If I didn’t know the area I would be very cautious about heading out to a bar in the water. It has potential to be dangerous with the tides filling in and someone could get in trouble real quick. Be safe and take care sir. Welcome to CF Bhands.

I like your idea of putting the size limit on cooler . I will have to do that even though I havent been fishing in 3+_ years .
