I’ve been hearing bass pro, cabelas coming to the lowcountry and upstate for ten years now
“Good things come to those who bait”
I heard it a while back, said right off of hwy. 78 between exit 203 & 205.

Boo…
Cabela’s was supposed to be put where the Tanger Outlet Center is. I heard that years ago. Don’t know what happened. Bass Pro Shop considered a Charleston area store 6-7 years ago but thought it would hurt the Savannah and Myrtle Beach locations. I am not quite sure how they figured that. They decided not to build . I don’t know if they are reconsidering?

Cabela’s is coming to Greenville where the old Greenville mall was

They were going to build one in Augusta a few years ago and it fell through when the economy tanked. Alot of utility work and planning had already taken place but they backed out at the last minute.
Gander Mountain was supposed to be coming along at about the same time and they backed out as well.
I would actually rather spend my money supporting the local folks in the area I fish. (Boat and Dock Supply in Beaufort as well as Southern Drawl Outfitters Hilton Head) You don’t get this service at Bass Pro!

I think a cool more huntin geared store like a gander mtn could do better. But a cabelas would be sweet!
Cabela’s was interested a few years ago but it was when Sanford was gov. and would not agree to some tax incentives they were looking for. I have mixed emotions about the big box stores. Great selection but none of them will help the locals stores in the long run and I would rather see the locals survive and stick around.
I struggle between big box/web stores and local because of where I live. The local tackle shop here in Greenwood is now out of business due to the owner retiring, but as far as saltwater fishing, they would give me a “boy, you ain’t from 'round here” kind of look when I even asked about anything. They sold Lowrance, but when I decided to buy an HDS unit I asked them could they get it (they didn’t have one) and they just said they didn’t want to fool with it.
I typically hate a big box store, but I’m not aware of Bass Pro/Cabelas wreaking havoc on the producer or consumer. I’m sure I’m just ignorant of it and am also sure that if they set up across from Beaufort Dock/Supply, the local guys would lose. I don’t want that at all…
I just wish I could deal with the low country-local guys easier from where I live. I can’t ride down there Friday night, be on the water by 6am, off after 6pm and ever actually deal with them. I have to buy everything from the internet.

Haddrell’s does web and phone orders. Call Scott at the West Ashley store and tell him what you need. I assume the other tackle shops do too.

Heck, if i’m planning on being on the water the same day as you, I’ll pick it up for you and meet you on the water. Just don’t try to order no square grouper

I agree that we should support our local business. Nothing beats hometown service and info. When these small locally owned business have disappeared , we will have lost a part of history.
Center Point Developers were going to build a large shopping center in the Summerville / Jedberg area. I believe they were looking at Cabelas / Bass Pro as the Anchor. Those plans might have gone the way of the Dodo Bird when the housing market crashed. I do however believe that the acreage just to the left of the Belvidere Cottages at the Charleston Harbor Resort would be a potential place for a World Wide Sportsman.

Even if there was a BPS here I bet I would be at Haddrells just as often because BPS didnt have the speciality stuff I was looking for. I can go to one local tackle shop and find what i want maybe half of the time. When I go to Haddrell’s i walk out with exactly what i need dang near every time.
I ordered a fillet table from Haddrells online the other week. It was free shipping (on a 25lb item) and it was at my door in two days. Price was competitive with Cabelas etc–actually think it was a few bucks cheaper. Can’t beat that–and supporting a local business.

As for me and my money we will go to Haddrell’s (or Chs Ang). I got a couple of hundred $$ burning a hole in my pocket right now and I was one exit from BPS in Atlanta yesterday and did not stop. Buying a Stradic at Haddrell’s is just more fun than bps. Driving from Greenville to buy a reel…how sick am I?
Haddrell’s all day for me, been dealing with Scott since Reel Johns was around.
