Cabelas will open in Greenville in the spring 2014.

Same here,great guy.

A certain type of fisherman goes into a bass pro shops kind of store for stuff, while a little bit different type of fisherman goes into an Atlantic Game and Tackle or Haddrells.

The stuff available in each type of retailer is glaringly different, and some people never realize it. Nothing wrong with either, but there is a difference for those that want to get down into those weeds.

I go into bass pro as a sight seeing trip moreso than a tackle buying trip. I cant remember buying any ammo or hunting supplies there either.

Almost like going to the zoo. I may buy a souvenir for a family member or perhaps some steak seasoning… Just to show a tangible result from my 2 hours of time killed once a year.

Local businesses kept cabelas from coming to Summerville.

Do you want a burger from bessinger’s, ruby Tuesday, or McDonald’s?

To each his own.

A guy with the development company came in my office not too long ago and told us all about what was going on up there. He talked about hotels, offices and houses but no Bass Pro. That’s a big hunk of land tho.

I drive 42 miles one way east bound to go to work (Ladson). I fish the ace basin saltwater, and lake marion, Eautawville to the lower lake freshwater. I work four ten’s from 2pm to 12:30am. I was in Charleston angler in Summerville yesterday and found one thing I was looking for. I don’t have the privilege of going to a local tackle shop before I go fishing. I have to have everything before I go. I would frequent bass pro if they opend a store around there.

Who needs them? I fish Edisto and Beaufort - I get 99% of my tackle from Haddrell’s and Beaufort Dock and Boat Supply - with that I get service, professional advice, and friends that I can do business with. Thank God we have them and NOT the big box stores.

I was told they are making a town center off of maine st in summerville, like mount P has and it will house the bass pro. I live out towards monks corner in a new development that is pretty big now and still has thousands of acres, but across the st from me they are supposed to cut an exit off 26 for the carnes crossing subdivision which will be the biggest in Carolina supposedly. I would assume these new developments are the reason for the interest on this side of Sville.

North Charleston, this came from a friend at West Marine. He said the Mayor said it was confirmed but would not disclose the location, would guess Tanger or even old Hammricks location. Announcement coming and ground breaking in November 2013

I’ll stick with Haddrell’s. I’ve never had anything but a great experience in their stores. Customer service is great and their willingness to share fishing knowledge and offer tips and advice is worth way more than the .50 I’d save at a big box store.

So funny the local tackle shops have figured it out. I really enjoy going into Haddrells and visiting with Dee and Scott. Great people, great service and as good if not better prices as the big boxes. I am just wondering when the local boat dealers are going to wake up and follow suite. Dee and Scott thanks for the great service you guys provide!!!

That $200 in my pocket I mentioned on page one of this thread has a new home. It’s not at Dick’s or Academy in Greenville.

Bass Pro is garbage…
Bass Pro is NOT coming to Summerville.

End of Story.

Phin was probably the most representative of what you’d most likely find if they put one in Charleston area. Those place are part tourist attraction and part retail store. It’s hard to not spend at least an hour in there since there’s so much to explore and look at. I enjoy doing that when you have the time to kill. You’ll buy some things there that maybe they don’t carry at a local/small shop. But you’ll still support the local/small shop, perhaps even more since you’ll find that the pricing is not that different. The reality is that you’re not going to spend the hour (or two) of your day that it takes to park and get through one of the mega stores when all you need is a pack of jigs. Unless you live next door to the mega store (hope you don’t!) it’s really not that convenient and you’re not going to get to know the people like you do at a local/small shop. Unfortunately, it could be similar to hardware stores. I like Lowe’s. But when I just need to grab one or two things, it’s much easier to stop in the small hardware store - I can be in, out, and on the way home before I get parked at Lowe’s. I say unfortunate since the local hardware store has not fared so well and I hope it’s not the same for the local tackle shop! However, I think some of that is also caused by the modern kid not being interested in the family business so it just closes when mom/dad are done. I could ramble on more about irony of changing demographics and internet that are pushing retail back to urban settings so the big box players are having to change their model and learn to work in a smaller space like the traditional local store that they ran out of business!

Stumpknocker I heard the same thing. I pass by there twice a day and have not seen any evidence. I do like Chas angler and Had tells also. Learned a valuable lesson last Monday…don’t let the young guys spool your bottom fishing reels. 1400 yds of 65lb power pro vs 300 yds …but I did get what I paid for.

Bass Pro might have a decent selection of stuff that’s not normally easy to find locally, but in reality, our local folks like Haddrells have stuff MUCH more precisely what we want, they know the area, they are (usually) closer to where we want to fish. I won’t say I wont’ spend time and money at a Bass Pro, but I will always have a preference for Haddrells, or the Charleston Angler.

I’ve never really found Bass Pro to be competitive in pricing, they are almost always around the same price as local places, save for maybe 5-10% lower prices on SOME items.
