I deal with all of the afore mentioned, with that said I spoke with BPS yesterday about my account and put the question to the young lady that took care of me. I really did not expect an honest answer but she claims that their will be one on Dorchester Road sometime in the near future for what it’s worth. You will never get the type of service you get locally, weather it be Atlantic or Haddrells or any of the smaller tackle shops no matter how big and interesting BPS is.
Thats interesting. I live off of Dorchester, and this part of town is very underserved by tackle shops. I do alot of my shopping at Wally World because its a 5 min drive. CA Summerville is 25 min one way w/o traffic , and nearest Haddrells is 45 one way. I will go out of my way to shop at Haddrells if possible as they are a great sponsor of our club. But when push comes to shove I will go where its most convenient. Now, If I can just get a Haddrells nearby I will go there exclusively I don’t care if BPS is next door.

Back when Sanford was governor, either Cabelas or BPS tried to locate here. Sanford wouldn’t agree to the tax subsidy they wanted, so they pulled out. Here’s an interesting article about BPS and how they extract huge tax subsidies in order to locate to a city. How many tax breaks do you think Charleston Angler or Haddrells or any other local tackle shop gets? I can answer for you. ZERO.
the last time my name was mentioned this many times on a forum it may not have been so pleasant! just kidding…all I can say is thanks to all the great people that support us day in and day out, great customers and great people are why we put in the long hours we put in and why we truly enjoy being able to help!

Since no one has mentioned it, I love Duncan’s Stop and Shop. It’s on my way to Bushy Park, and they are so friendly every time I go in there. When I take my son fishing, we always stop and get some mud minnows, snacks, drinks, and tackle if we need it. They are always happy to show my son the minnows when they’re scooping them into our bucket.
Charleston Marine also has a good tackle selection, and my son loves their live shrimp. Those are friendly folks in there too.
That said, there are more local owners of Walmart in Charleston (stock owners) than there are owners of local tackle shops, and Walmart employs way more people.
Bass Pro is privately owned, but would employ a lot more people than the local tackle shops.
I don’t dislike any local tackle shops, although I have gotten some snobby treatment at a Charleston Angler. Most of them are just way out of my way.

If they open up a store in Summerville like the one in Myrtle Beach, none of the local tackle shops have anything to fear. The MB store is like 3 or 4 miles from the ocean and has a pathetic selection of saltwater gear and even more pathetic staff of saltwater fishermen. I was looking at some reels the other day, pathetic selection, and the salesman couldn’t tell me anything that wasn’t written on the box. Turns out he didn’t even fish. Spool a reel, only after you buy an entire spool of line. Looking for something listed in the catalog, they can order it for you, free in store pick-up. Want to talk to someone about the Lowrance HDS Touch, he’ll be back in fifteen minutes from break. Want bait, sure they have it as long as its cigar minnows or old shrimp. Want to buy a gun or scope, no problem, after they have to look at 10 different guns to get the one you want to look at and read the tag attached to answer those questions, similar to the reels, most of them don’t shoot or hunt. Want a scope or bino’s, awesome most of them don’t know the difference between a BSA and Swarovski, but those Nikon Prostaff’s are sweet.
Bass Pro is nothing more than an sportsman’s Wal-Mart. Factor in the lack of customer service and product knowledge and you don’t save a bit.

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.

seems like I remember mike able from haddrells being pretty influential in putting pressure on the state government to STOP the tax breaks that BPS was asking for, that in turn stopped them from building here.
I have no problem with competition, but we all need to compete on an even field
I own a tackle shop, and have found myself at the james island walmart buying misc stuff
Chris- you’re honesty is refreshing!! Not everyone on here is a millionaire! I had a not so great experience at your shop but I will be back. As I said before you will never beat the professionalism and experience you get from the locals. The guys at BPS are just doing a job but sometimes they have what I need when I need it. I’ll see you soon!
please call me and let me know what caused you to feel the experience wasn’t to your satisfaction
we are definitely not perfect, but we do try to do the best we can, and if we don’t know we did something wrong, we cant fix it, or at least try not to let it happen again.
in the past year at Charleston Marine, with the new location, and the new staff, our bait and tackle sales have more than tripled, and boat and motor sales and repairs are up over 50 percent, thanks in large part to the support of the great folks at Charleston fishing.com
Chris- I had a Lowrance HDS7 GENII installed in my boat last Nov., I was out last Wed. and had no power. Is this something you could look at in a short period of time? Are you able to check marine radios as well? Let me know and I will bring it in asap today. Thanks!!

I could not be more excited about this.
It will be right down the road from me…closer than any local tackle shop.

i am sure the locals will support the local shops and as far as big box stores go it is what is convenient at the time, they are ok if you have plenty of time to look but most of us know what we want when we need it and will stop where it is the easiest to get in and out of, yes we will go to the big box stores and buy their lost leaders or specials deals and promotions or items that we can only find there but when we are ready to go fishing we will stop by where we always have to get what we need. unfortunately this is change , either for better or worse, and we accept the things we cannot change and go forward, some of the local shops will need to rethink their business and make needed changes to fill that nitch that big box stores do not have, so this could be a good thing for all , i hope

I think they need to build out here in Walterboro,I think there are only 3 maybe 4 places to buy tackle and supplies besides the under stock walmart ouy here.
